Just wondering, what does a typical day look like to most students? How many classes do people generally take?

Most UG students take between 16 to 18 units. How many classes this equates to really depends on your major and the type of classes you are enrolling in. Many journalism courses are 3 units, while GEs and nearly all other “major” classes are 4 units. Two units classes might be of a fun or recreational nature (ie: Introductory dance or theatre classes for non-majors) while some are very work-intensive and are by no means “easy.”

To put it simply – there is no “typical” day for students and what your schedule will look like is entirely dependent upon your major, the classes you choose and the classes you are required to take.

That being said, it is usually common for freshman and sophomores to have less “open” schedules (classes for about 4-6 hours a day for 4-5 days out of the week) and for juniors and seniors to have more open schedules (4-8 hours of class, 2-3 days out of the week.) This is because as most student progress in their degree, they enroll in more major-specific classes that generally meet once a week for long periods while underclassmen usually use their first two years to knock out intro courses and GEs that usually meet several times a week. The openness of upperclassmen schedules also allows students to hold internships in their final two years of college.
