Typo makes my activities list feel unrealistic

I currently have 84 total hours written in my common app - 42 of them are exclusive to the summer, but that number should be 24. One of my activities lists 20 hours, but that one should be 10. Should I email admissions offices about these? I don’t want it to seem like I’m lying and be flagged under suspicion.

I’m assuming you’re asking about applications you’ve already submitted, like Early Decision/Early Action applications? Others might feel differently, but honestly, I believe this is something you should have corrected before you submitted. If you had a single obvious typo in a single place, then an email would make sense, but having several seems like exaggeration and is difficult to explain via email. So I would just plan to fix it going forward with your future applications and let it go for the completed ones.

Sorry, I should probably clarify: The 42 hours are all in one activity (an internship I did over the summer) and the 20 hours are also in one activity (dedicated that time to making music.) I’m just wondering if I should leave it or not for those two specifically

I think the point here is that it does not seem like a typo if it happened twice. Was this an honest mistake? If so, how would you explain to admissions that you made two? How did 24 hours in a summer internship turn into 42? is there a good reason? The 20 hours instead of 10 seems not worth an email but the total of these mistakes (exaggerations) might be concerning. I am not doubting you personally: I am just thinking about how it looks.

If not typos, I would not email admissions but change these going forward. If they are honest typos I would email but it is hard to explain it happening twice. So I would just correct the internship 42 hours and leave the other one alone.

If they were intentional I don’t think the OP would be concerned with correcting it. OP - I think you should do whatever helps calm your own spirit and conscience. And it sounds like this has your worry-meter going off so if it’s just a matter of emailing your admissions officer at a few schools, I don’t think there is ever a reason to NOT correct false information. In fact, this could put you on their radar as someone who doesn’t want to be dishonest.

That’s 100% fair. Both were sincere mistakes but I was worried about sending 2 requests at once because (like you said) it may seem like I exaggerated myself. I appreciate the advice!

@novemberisgreat maybe just correct the internship 42 hours.

I like November too!
