Eid al-Fitr is one of eight paid holidays for all team members covered by the contract, while Labor Day is not a paid holiday," Gary Mickelson, Tyson’s media relations director, told the Shelbyville Times-Gazette.

This sure seems like a slippery slope. I guess eventually employers will make all holidays ‘float days’ and traditional holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial day, etc. will go away.

The union and company both agreed. I don’t have a problem.

I think its sad that the company has eliminated a holiday that is traditionally spent with the family. The federal government and all 50 states recognize the Labor Day holiday, so most parents and their kids will be off work or school that day. (Although I recognize that many businesses are still open that day). I don’t know when the Muslim holiday takes place, but for those who are not Muslim, the day off will not likely be shared with other members of the family who do not work at the Tyson plant.

These are the other 7 paid holidays–

The seven additional paid holidays are the employee’s birthday, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Never worked for a place where my birthday was considered a paid holiday!

The workers who aren’t union will still get Labor Day as a paid holiday.
