I might have to decide between these two schools. Right now I am planning on majoring in mathematics with a future in medicine. U Chicago has a great math department, but I love the Cornell campus. Which would you choose? And please don’t start debating about which school is more “prestigious” and stuff like that. In the end, it’s a personal choice.

You really can’t go wrong with either school. I’ve heard that Chicago’s stereotype of a crappy social life really does hold some truth. Visit and see which one you’d like better. Talk with people from the math departments at each school.

ok…i had the SAME q a few months back (and even posted this same thread over at the UChicago forum) so i can understand the dilemma u face…
let me put it this way:
Do you have a philosophical bend?
Do you like a small campus setting?
Do you prefer having a more personal interaction with the professors?
{if the answer to all of the above is yes, go Chicago}

now ask urself:
Am i ready to enroll in amongst the toughest courses in existance?
Am i ready to live in a campus that more resembles a city?
Am i ready to fend for myself and not be showered with personal attention?
(If the answer to all of the above is yes, go Cornell}

But i’ll give u a very frank opinion, Chicago’s Math department has a slight edge over Cornell’s…but if u work really hard, both are really good for you…infact Cornell will let u develop other passions other than math more judiciously

thanks for the feedback guys

Arjun, out of curiosity, what have you decided?

OK, i’ve posted 3 of these but in this decision i’d go with cornell
U of Chicago is a great school, dont get me wrong, but the social life is definitely lacking (even though chicago is a pretty cool city). If you like the scenary and like the school, then it should be no debate for you. to be honest, ivy schools only have the PRESTIGE. education is basically similar. yet going to an ivy school is sweet cause… well you’re going to an ivy lol

hmm…my tag says ED Cornell…what do u think happened?
(btw for ur info i EAes UChicago)
+I wanted Engineering/Big Campus/Rigorous courseload…so i think i don’t regret my ED decision one bit

BanKai,
That attitude of yours is very wrong.
In todays world, the Ivy phenomenon isn’t that exceptional.
UChicago has been accepted as among the best universities in the world and even beats many ivies in the rankings.
Also…i believe the academic environment at UChicago is suited to their needs…its like a small conglommeration of intelletuals.
At Cornell, it being so big, there are all sorts of people…which lends it more diverse appearance.

bump it up

How about making a decision between Cornell, UChicago, and Penn (SAS)? Is Penn really supposed to be much easier than the other two?

I saw some time ago a ranking by departments, and Cornell CAS beat Penn SAS in almost every department except economics.

Fun doesn’t go to die at Cornell :p

And Spanks aka HiImAnAlcoholic is a living proof ;)
