U Chicago is launching a program to expand its faculty. Any T30-60 schools like this?

My son, a freshman at U Chicago forwarded to me a letter from its president. It’s interesting that he is instituting a plan for faculty EXPANSION effective from this year, the first major expansion in years. During the freshman orientation week, a few faculty members also told me that they had a RAISE this academic year.

I have the feeling that U Chicago looks at the current academic budget scene as an opportunity to further strengthen its academic standing by poaching outstanding faculty members from other universities. I have seen in my industry (high tech) clear examples of couple of businesses emerging stronger than ever and more competitive than their peers during a severe economic downturn, while lesser players are weeded out.

Anyway, I digress… For S2, I am looking at T30-60 range school. Do you know of any schools within this range that seem to be hiring more faculty, rather than cutting them, and in general appear poised to come ahead during this severe downturn? For an obvious reason, rather than focusing on past glories, I would rather bet on the schools with an upswing.

Sounds like they are looking to poach some top young faculty from some peer institutions not in such good financial shape.

Wisconsin has several initiatives underway to add faculty in the range of 100-150 total. The largest single one is the Madison Initiative.

American University is also adding faculty. I wish I could find the source of this information but right now it eludes me.

Denison is seeking to add tenure-track/tenured faculty; I can’t remember how many additions are projected.
