U Florida vs Umass Amherst vs Brandeis vs Boston College (WL) vs Tufts (WL) for CS

Does anyone have experience with the strengths and weaknesses of these programs? Is it easy to sign up for courses? Are course offerings robust?

Are you already admitted to these programs (or the parent of an admitted student), or are you thinking about where to apply next year?

Admitted to first 3 and WL at last two.

UMass is nationally known for its strength in CS.
Brandeis will offer the most flexibility&support.

My youngest son was at UF for 2 years (transferred out). He was minoring in CS and had a lot of friends that were CS majors. They all had no problem getting crazy good internships all over the country (especially Cali and the Northeast US).

Florida public universities do have a summer session requirement that can interfere with summer jobs and internships. If you do attend a Florida public university and have the summer session requirement, it is best to complete it early, since the later summers are when you would be looking for the better summer jobs and internships (due to having completed more CS and other relevant courses by then).

My daughter is a first year at Brandeis and absolutely loves it. She’s not in CS, so I can’t speak to that specifically, but she’s had no trouble getting into the classes she wants. If you are a prospective parent you can join the Brandeis parents facebook group and they will gladly answer your specific questions about the major.

In terms of program strength, U Mass has a national reputation in CS.

If you like another of your options based on more general characteristics, consider that school as well.

Even If admitted, your waiting-list schools would not seem especially enhancing to your list.

Actually, having an internship can take the place of the summer requirement. From the link you posted:
“earning UF credit for an internship in Gainesville or another location”

However, wouldn’t that limit the choice of internships, particularly the paid ones that may pay significant money for CS majors (since internships for credit are more likely to be unpaid)?

No. You can get course credit for a regular, paid internship.

I am only familiar with UF. Alumni and D23 a freshman not CS
UF is a great school “bias”

UF just opened a new Data Science Building in November

UF Super Computer
UF supercomputer No. 1 in U.S. for energy efficiency; No. 2 in U.S., No. 3 worldwide in higher ed - News - University of Florida.

UF is a large SEC school so along with their top rated Academics you will have big time sports as well, BC would be the closest with college sports.
Greek life is there if you want it, It is not as frenzied as Alabama, or even FSU. There is a lot to do on campus if you don’t go Greek. Always seems like something going on campus.
Students seem happy and engaged when we visit.
It is the State Flagship and many students give up higher scholarships or Honor programs at other schools to attend
Dorms are mainly standard with communal bathrooms Co Ed by floor.
There are some apartment style and where 2 rooms share a bathroom type dorms.

All 5 schools will offer you a different type of college experience and are solid choices.
BC would be the closest “college experience” to UF staying in Mass.
UF is a great choice but seems like an outlier with all your other schools in New England
