We live in Michigan and a friend who is a senior exec with a manufacturing company and UofM engineering alum will not hire engineers from UofM. Instead, she recruits from Purdue.
There are also many hundreds of companies that do hire from Michigan. Lots of companies tend to hire where they have Alumni at also. This is nothing new. My son’s international company came to Michigan to get a Michigan engineer. He’s loving Sweden for the last 3 year’s.
What is her reasoning to not hire from Michigan? Seems interesting since it has such good engineering programs.
Please refrain from bashing, even in jest, in a college forum. Let’s keep this constructive for those who visit the Michigan forum with legitimate interest in the school. We appreciate your understanding.
Two reasons. First, she says it emphasizes theoretical over hands-on problem solving. Second, she claims that UofM students display a sense of entitlement.
Not sure if this team that I met a few year’s earlier would agree. Nasa seems happy. U-M student group CLAWS develops tools to help astronauts navigate space - Industrial & Operations Engineering https://share.google/VP7kR8AiNxuN7IJ2O
I would also think Ford would disagree.
I could go on. Not every company is going to click. I know a manufacture that only hires from Northern Illinois University. They like the students they get.
No doubt. While running a business in Chicago my wife stopped interviewing candidates from Northwestern because she found them to be entitled and arrogant. Instead, she started hiring from DePaul and eventually around a third of her employees were Blue Demons.
Nice. I live by Wrigley… a friend of mine from Microsoft and works out of Anon Building, pretty much hires UIUC…. He’s an alumni. Etc etc.
Do you mean the Aon building? I worked there for a while in the early 2000s.
Lol. Yes. Can’t text. You might know my friend then. Lol. I was there for an AI camp a few months ago.
