<p>Based on the objective data, this one is not even close as Rice is well ahead of Michigan on nearly every measure. Only on the subjective Peer Assessment does Michigan rank ahead of Rice and this is thanks to its status as a very large research institution with over 26000 undergraduates (and another 14000 graduate students).</p>

<p>As GoBlue notes, these are extremely different schools. Rice, with just over 3000 undergraduate students, is barely more than 1/10th the size of Michigan. Rice’s student body is among the finest in the country and IMO, if Rice were located in the Northeast, its reputation would be many times greater and its academic prestige at the level of all but HYP. I suspect that there are very few (if any) people affiliated with or knowledgeable about Rice who would consider Michigan a peer institution. I would agree with them.</p>
