U (sic) ga

Not looking to start anything, but I have seen references to UGA written this way. What does it mean? Is it an insult from Georgia Tech?

Uga is the name of their bulldog mascot.

It’s an insult from Georgia Tech.

^ what’s the insult?

My interpretation is that UGA calls itself a university, but it’s not really.

(sic) means that you’re quoting an error. Like if somebody wrote “your wrong” and I wanted to quote them but make clear that it wasn’t MY error, I’d write “Your (sic) wrong.”

Hence, calling themselves a “university” is “their error,” as far as I can tell. Kind of a clever burn. :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe some Tech students are bothered by the fact that UGA has developed an engineering program. That said, the amusing rivalry between the 2 schools has been longstanding and ongoing.

Google “Georgia Tech traditions” and you will see several listed, including U(sic)GA.

GA is the abbreviation for Georgia. UGA is the abbreviation for Univ of Georgia…and also written that way because of the mascot, UGA.

I see no insult. Where is the insult??

I learned a sad fact a few days ago when I asked a UGA fan why their mascot seemed to die every few years. I was told that the “white” version of the bulldog has a short lifespan. :frowning:

The insult is implying its not a university. The UF/FSU insults are a bit more amusing, IMO. Unfortunately some some aren’t appropriate for typing here. One that is ok is what they called FSU the criminoles after some illegal activity several years ago.

This coming from the North Avenue Trade School?

DEFINITION: sic - used in brackets after a copied or quoted word that appears odd or erroneous to show that the word is quoted exactly as it stands in the original.

This would be in line with post #4 above.

Yes, I see now that it’s a clever insult by Georgia Tech.

Actually, seems pretty lame in comparison to other insults between rival schools.

^ well it is a nerd school…

I’m from the school that gets made fun of with jokes about child rape.

This seems brilliant in comparison.

I’m well aware of the rivalry. In fact, just tonight GT volleyball won the state challenge, sweeping Kennesaw State, Georgia State, and then Georgia. Full arena, lots of red shirts with red faces walking out. Even a September exhibition match of a minor sport is a big deal.

I attended a state university, and our big rival was the state tech school. We had our put-downs, which I later learned were exactly the same at other state rivals.

One I remember from my days: did you hear the {other school} library burned down? It was a tragedy - BOTH books burned. And one wasn’t even colored in yet.

I later heard the same joke used for a presidential library.

My favorite is what do Georgia and Georgia Tech students have in common? They all got into Georgia.
