U Wash asks state for $150 million stadium

You can tell the state is feeling flush–they may go for it.

[Local News | Tax dollars for stadium? Wait, this time it’s Huskies | Seattle Times Newspaper](http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004131790_stadium18m.html)

Clearly a better use of state money than wasting it on trying to improve the performance of minority students in underperforming urban schools.

I agree- dangle the carrot of a fancy football stadium and those students might get motivated enough to go to class ;)

Seattle needs a better venue for pro hoops. That Seattle Key Arena has been around since '62. Even the Hec, which is older than dirt got a face lift.

Let’s see, we could fund a robotics-based science and engineering program in every public high school in the state for about $5 million per year, or spend $150 million to pay for a facility to support minor league semi-professional football. I’m sure I know what course the legislature will choose…

dudedad in 1995 almost $75 million was spent remodeling the Arena.
The Sonics didn’t deserve to have another remodel, the tickets were already too expensive for most Seattle families to afford.

In case no one noticed- I was TIC
It is pretty evident that whatever the UW wants- the UW gets.
I agree that our state needs more institutions of higher education- but I disagree that we should be spending our tax dollars so the UW can be a chain with north and south campuses.
I would rather we have a entirely new charter for a college- perhaps a poly-tech university, and put it in E Wa.

At least spread it around a little.

( Husky stadium is pretty old though I think- but what a piece of property)

Spot on… the consolidation of higher education decisions into one school system isn’t fair. We are creating an higher education monopoly where you have to fit the UW’s mold to be a college student. A few people will get to decide what a college student is or isn’t. Not everybody wants to be a husky.

I’m going to sound like a transplant, but Washington could do a lot worse than copy California’s system of higher education. Kerr’s commission got it right.

perhaps if the UW attracts more football types- they can meet the gap of their football scholarships by patrolling Frat Row.

According to KING5 News, 75-80% polled washingtonians oppose state funds for either stadium.

The news about that girl broke my heart. She escaped the horrors of Rwanda and was brutally attacked here!

Actually the $150 million only covers less than half the stadium costs, alumni are paying for the rest. Since many state legislators are UW alumni this will pass. A great university needs a great football stadium…

Countrywide should buy naming rights…

^ Haha…It’ll be BofA instead.

At least UDub can modernize its football stadium without having lawsuits from tree huggers…unlike my alma mater.

They cut down the trees in Seattle and sent then to Alaska a long time ago.
