Uber

Question: How come I’ve never heard this word used before, until I saw it on CC. And people seem to use it a lot around here. Is the reason for this because of the location of where I live in the US? Or do people not say “Uber” in conversation? Maybe it’s one of those words that you only write, but you don’t say (what am I talking about???). It means: very, extremely, ultra, super, wicked…right?

Insight?

I think it’s been assimilated into teen slang by these 31337 l33tspeak people who like to substitute letters with numbers. You always hear kids saying uber this and uber that like it’s some kind of cool new word they discovered. I hear it a lot from gaming freaks  who probably trade banter like this through chat functions in their games.

I have a feeling the short form “uber” came from the German term “uber alles”:
über al·les
Pronunciation: "[UE]-ber-'ä-les
Usage: foreign term
Etymology: German
: above everything else

Let’s just say I’ve also seen it in news articles when they’re trying to be hip. It’s not a word or term I use because of the simple link to caffeinated, pasty-faced gamers. :)

i use it when i talk once in a while but i am not a nerd… im unique… :D

" "über-, uber-, über prefix, adj.

over-, super-": Used like wunder- as in wunderkind [< German über “over” < Middle High German über < Old High German ubar]. Interestingly German-speakers often prefer Anglicisms and would therefore prefer, for example, Superhacker to Überhacker, although they would understand both to mean the same thing. In the same vein the word superman in English originates as a direct translation (loan translation) of the German Übermensch, but one hears Superman much more often in German.
I Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuule!

I 4|/| 1337 |-|4(|<0|^0z35 U %U(|<0|^z LOL!!!111!!!1

Yea, stare in wonder.

uber is the epitome of geek talk. its unbelievable how unattractive it makes a person seem. i get shivers every time i hear it. uber. oh man, its something comic book store guy from the simpsons would say. it kills.

I love to say uber, but only on the computer. In real life people just stare at me when I say it

Yeah, actually, I don’t think I’ve ever said uber in real life. Or online…

Maybe I should change my name…

I think it’s ok to say if you know German but otherwise you seem like some sugoiposer megalogeek.

lol… We say it a lot in my part of central Florida. It is teeny bit backwards here… the nerds w/style are cool, and the losers are geeks that try to be intelligent, but aren’t really.

me and my friends use it all the time (online and in real life…and we are not what people would consider the nerdy/geeky types)

and i just heard it used today on the classic rock radio station today
