Hello! I am a high school senior in Oregon currently looking into applying to some UC’s, mostly UCB and UCLA, however when I mentioned this to my guidance counselor he brought up that I did not have a year of art. I have played the viola since 4th grade, but was told music did not satisfy the requirement. When I look at the UC A to G requirements however, music is listed as a way to satisfy category F. Therefore I was wondering if my years in the school’s orchestra count or not?
Was orchestra a graded class that is on your transcript?
Requirement “f” is for visual/performing art and music is included as long as it is a graded class.
Can you afford the UC’s? As an student from Oregon, there is virtually no financial aid for OOS students so you would pay $55K per year. Can your parents afford that?
That’s kind of completely unrelated but money is not a concern.
Does that change anything?
No, you still need a year of a graded visual and performing arts class.
OOS students always need to know that it won’t be cheap.
Well I did receive grades for my orchestra classes, so I’m assuming I’m okay now!
And I understand that, I try to avoid being an OOS student to a state college, UCB and UCLA are the only ones where I couldn’t avoid the temptation. Lovely too, since california is on the more expensive side heh
You should be all set.
Good luck
