UC and UF (out of state) Chances?

<p>Hi! </p>

<p>I know out-of-state applicants have a tougher time getting into UC’s especially but UC Davis is my dream school and UC San Diego is also a close favorite. Out of the UCs I also applied to Berkeley as a reach and Santa Cruz. </p>

<p>I applied to plenty of other schools but another that I’m interested in is the University of Florida. </p>

<p>ACT: 31
GPA: unweighted 3.8, ~ 4.15 w
UC GPA: 3.83 (because my honors aren’t “UC Approved” honors :confused: )
APs: Biology (4)</p>

<p>State of residency: NYC
I attend a specialized high school. (it’s public but competitive)
Significant coursework for this year (I am currently a senior): 2 APs, 1 honors, 3 science courses </p>

<p>I have poor ECs (no clubs or teams), but I volunteer at an aquarium. ( I started in late summer 2013)
For one of my UC essays I wrote about volunteering and overcoming my parents’ disapproval for my passion for animals. For the other I wrote about art helping me overcome insecurities. They’re well written in my opinion but they’re not “tear worthy” or a sob story or anything like that. They do, however, clearly demonstrate my personality.
Similarly to my first UC essay, I wrote about finding happiness through my passion for animals in my essay for the University of Florida. </p>

<p>Majors: Animal Science for UCD, undeclared/marine biology for UCSD. (I chose undeclared but made an appeal to change it to marine bio)</p>

<p>what are my chances for UCD, UCSD, and UF?

<p>@spiritkoi‌ as I didn’t read anything about my school’s honors courses not being approved by UF, I’m assuming roughly a 4.15.<br>
for the essay I essentially wrote about finding happiness through volunteering at the aquarium and taking three science courses this year. I defined the good life as one where my passion for animals could thrive. </p>

<p>@tameyourshark‌ Oh so your weighted GPA is +.5 for honors and +1 for AP? I was just making sure because I know my school inflates GPA :slight_smile: Other than that, I think you are a high match.</p>

<p>@spiritkoi‌ that’s how I calculated it while using an online GPA calculator. (my school doesn’t calculate GPAs out of a 4.0 scale and doesn’t calculate weighted averages, so these are rough estimates). thanks for the input! :smiley: </p>

<p>UF would probably be your best chance, UCs are very selective and most of their selection is about ECs, not numbers (as their average gpas are around/lower than your gpas)</p>

<p>@janeypie I would have to disagree UC’s put GPA and class performance at the highest regard when making selections EC’s are used but not to the same intensity.</p>

<p>Your ACT score is competitive but your UC GPA is below average for all UC’s listed. EC’s and essays can boost your chances but it will depend upon how they are reviewed by admissions. Your lack of AP classes will hurt your course rigor. </p>

<p>@Gumbymom‌ yea my UC GPA worries me :confused: it’s so frustrating that my honors aren’t “UC approved honors.” my family is middle class and will be able to pay a significant amount of tuition but not the full ~55k estimated total. thanks for the input! :slight_smile: </p>
