UC App Question

I forgot to mention that I received the Governor’s Scholarship two times for scoring high on the SAT9 exams. Do you think UCSD would have given me points in the Honors/Awards section had I mentioned these scholarships? Am I screwed? Also, I just recently got a letter from the Collegeboard saying that I am an AP Scholar with Distinction. The award was issued on October 31, but I didn’t get the letter until a few days ago, so I was not able to put it on my UC app. Will I be able to contact the UC’s and add this to my app, or not? I saw the UCSD comprehensive review website and I am very, very close. Any little factor such as this could get me in or leave me out. So guys, what do you think?

I got the AP scholar award a few days after I sent in my UC app too…don’t worry, they’ll probably assume that you got the award just by looking at your AP scores.

the governor’s scholarship wont really help you out in admissions anyway; plenty of students applying to UCSD received it so it doesnt help you stand out.

similar for AP Scholar. besides, AP Scholar is kinda redundant, its just showing the adcom the same thing as shown in your AP scores section… that you passed 3+ tests with whatever the average required was.

sinful_saint, how do you know that you are very very close?

Okay… Take a look at these two sites:

http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/comreview.html</a>

This is the way that Comprehensive Review works at UCSD. They have a formula that gives each applicant a certain number of points and a cutoff score determines whether that applicant is accepted or rejected.

I will break down to you how many points I will likely be given. Keep in mind that the article that the second link I posted directs you to said that the cutoff score for Fall 2004 admissions was 7,456 points.

Step I - Academic Review Maximum Consideration
Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA) 3818 (UC GPA x 1000) / 4,500
Scores of All Required Exams 2900 (SAT I score/2 + Three SAT II Scores) / 3,200
Number of “A-G” Courses Beyond the Minimum 500 / 500

Step II - Additional Academic Factors
Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 0 / 300
Educational Environment 0 / 300

Step III - Socioeconomic Factors
Low Family Income 0 / 300
First Generation College Attendance 0 / 300

Step IV – Personal Characteristics and Achievement Factors
Demonstrated Leadership 150 / 300
Special Talents/Achievements/Awards 0 / 300 - I’ve been playing chess for 10 years, but I haven’t won any awards for chess. I am saying I will be getting 0 for this category because I do not believe they will give me any award points for my four AP scores of 4 and one score of 5.
Community and Volunteer Service 0 / 300 - I heard that UCSD gives either 150 points for 100 hours of community service or 300 points for 200 hours. Unfortunately, I had only completed 80 hours when my dad told me to stop “wasting my time at the convalescent center.” :frowning:
Participation in Pre-Collegiate/Motivational and Enrichment Programs 0 / 300
Special Circumstances/Personal Challenges 0 / 500

That means my total would be 3818 points for GPA + 2900 for test scores + 500 for extra courses + 150 for being president of a club… Which equals 7368 points. 88 points below the 7456 point cutoff for admission to UCSD Fall 2004. Huuuh… If they give me points for qualifying for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, or if the article I read was wrong and they give me SOME points for community service (I wrote one of my 200 word essays about it) then I will likely be admitted. For those types of factors, they usually either give 150 or 300 points, and I only need 88!! Well… I’m sure you all now see why I am so stressed.

These are my stats, by the way:

GPA: 3.67 (UW) / 3.82 (UC) / 4.10 (High School) - My UC GPA looks low because the system only gives extra credit for a total of eight honors and AP semesters taken during sophomore and junior years, while I had taken a grand total of 16 semesters.

Class Rank: 30 / 601

SAT I: 710 (M) / 730 (V)

SAT II: 740 Writing / 700 Math IC / 740 US History

AP’s: I took European History sophomore year (got a 4 on the test) and took English Language (5), US History (4), Chemistry (4), and Calculus AB (4) during my junior year. This year, I am taking AP Statistics, Biology, Psychology, and English Literature.

Honors Courses: Freshman year, I took Honors Biology and Literature. Sophomore year, I took Honors Chemistry, Pre-Calculus, and World Literature. This year, I am taking Honors American Government, because AP Government was not offered.

EC’s: I have been a devoted member of Academic Decathlon, the Computer Club, Chess Club, and the California Scholarship Federation since freshman year. I have been Treasurer, and am now President, for Academic Decathlon and Vice President of Computer Club.

Volunteering: I spent some time this summer at a local convalescent center and created strong relationships with many patients and employees there.

You look good for UCSD, relax.

I originally thought I was good for UCSD too, but they decide admission by using a freakin formula… Those cold, hard numbers do not lie. They just look you in the eye and slap you across the face.

That was a very hard slap to my eye…it burns like crazy now. great.

What about our AP scores, AP/honors courses taken, number of hours we devoted to our extracurriculars, etc. …they don’t seem to have included those into the formula.

Apparently, none of that stuff really matters. Well, here I come UCI…

Here I come, CC.
