Could someone please explain the “filing period” that UCs have? Is it that they want you to get in by the date the filing period starts or within the filing period? Any information answering this question and just general UC application info would be great.

[University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/index.html)

You can start on November 1st, and you have to submit by November 30th.

Within the filing period.

It opens end of october, I think, and closes end of november.

You file during that 30 day period in Nov, not before, not after. There are no extra documents that you have to have someone else send except official test scores. For example, recommendations are not accepted and you do not submit official high school transcript but instead self-report grades and classes in application. Moreover, it accepts test scores through the December testing dates for SAT and ACT. As long as it gets test scores by mid-Jan, you are fine. You are not required to submit SAT IIs but two are recommended. It does not accept Math 1 subject test so if you submit math it must be Math 2. It does not want mid-year reports after you apply with grades from first semester senior year although it sometimes makes specific requests for some students to submit them (usually some borderline students). Your admission will thus be based on grades through junior year.

Moreover, you go by the UCs grading system. Only grades that count are those in sophomore and junior year, and you can get up to but no more than 8 extra weight points for AP and honors courses (meaning basically two courses per semester in sophomore and junior year). It does not use plus and minuses so any A- you have becomes an A but any B+ you have becomes a B. You can find a lot of information including what you need to assure being admitted to a UC (but not necessarily one of your choice), at UCs admission site: [University of California - Freshman](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/freshman/index.html)
