UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@goldencub,

I believe you have your IGETC completed right? If yes, I think it’s doable in 4 semesters if your willing to spend another summer at Berkeley as well.

I would structure it similar to:

1st Summer: Enrolled in 8 total units breaking down to 4 units for a Philosophy core course and a 4 unit American Cultures requirement course. (67 total units completed at end)

1st Fall: Enrolled in 13 total units breaking down to 8 units for 2 Philosophy core courses, 3 units for Slavic 45, and a 2 unit DeCal. (80 completed at end)

1st Spring: Enrolled in 15 total units breaking down to 8 units for 2 Philosophy core courses, a 4 unit Philosophy elective, and 3 units for Slavic 46. (95 completed)

2nd Fall: Enrolled in 15 or 16 total units breaking down to 4 units for your last Philosophy core course, a 4 unit philosophy elective, 4 units for a Russian Lit elective course, and 3 or 4 units for your Russian Lit Cultures requirement. (120/121 completed)

2nd Spring: Enrolled in 16 units breaking down to 4 units for your last Philosophy elective and 12 units for your last 3 Russian Lit requirements. (136/137 completed at end)

Without another summer, it’s likely a 5 semester affair where you watch your total units and make sure you are under under 130 units at the end up of your 4th semester in order to finish the minor. If you go over the limit your enrollment will be limited to the extension and summer sessions which isn’t too bad in this case as you still have the opportunity to finish the summer directly after your graduation.

On the other hand, your unit count is a little unique in that you could even position yourself to stay a 6th semester without a need for petition. 59+13+13+13+13+13=124. So taking the minimum load of 13 units every semester (and not taking any additional CC/UC summer courses) would have you at 124 units at the end of your 5th semester and eligible for a 6th semester without a need to petition for a term extension. Note that almost all financial aid is limited to 5 semesters as a transfer though.

I noticed an adding error (lol!) in my previous post. The sample schedule completed counts should be 110/111 for the 2nd Fall and 126/127 for the 2nd Spring.

Hey guys!

I have a question about the cal day email from yesterday:

For those of you who got the email, did you happen to meet with a berkeley counselor during their visit to your college and wrote down your email on an information card, or did you happen to meet with a berkeley counselor on berkeley’s campus and wrote your email down either on an information card or through the registration system?

Also, were there any of you who did any of the above but did not receive a cal day email?

My friend and I (different majors) got the email while some other friends did not, so we are wondering if the information card during our counselor visits is the reason to why we received the email as part of promotional activities.

@enmngm I wrote my email down somehow when meeting with a counselor on Berkeley’s campus. I think that allowed me to sign up for emails.

@enmngm I got the invitation email too. I wrote down my email on an info card when I met a ucb counselor. However I didn’t submitted the card to the counselor and he even didn’t take my email. He just looked at my other Info like gpa when we talked.

@enmngm

I received CAL Day email, I’m in Berkeley TAP.

The email says it’s “open to the public” so I wouldn’t read too much into it.

@SDGoldenBear Wait - so, say I were to take 13-14 units in the Fall, 15 in the Spring, and 16 thereafter (125-6 total, I think - not sure if I’ll leave CC with 64 or 65 units, I forget). Would I be able to enroll for a 5th semester without having to petition? I would, right?

I read the unit ceiling information on the page, but that only tells so much. Would I have to leave at least 1 philosophy class for the 5th semester? I could technically graduate in the Spring - I only need 9 philosophy classes to graduate. They won’t force me to, right? Do I have to put myself on the graduating list, or something?

I want to take a 5th semester to (1) get more out of Berkeley, (2) complete the Russian Literature minor and take additional philosophy classes, and (3) be able to study for the LSAT during the summer of 2018 (after my 4th semester), take the exam in September, apply for law school in the Fall, so as to have a 6 month break between undergrad and law school after graduation.

Also - Slavic 45/46 are not offered during the Summer - and this Fall, the Slavic department offers a Nabokov course, which they rarely do (last time was years ago) - and he’s my favorite author. So I have to take that class.

Anyway, here’s my current plan. In the Fall, I plan to take Philos 100 - Philosophical Methods (intensive writing course that helps one deal with Philos upper-divs - papers every week, etc.), Slavic 45 (3 units), and the upper-div Slavic 134F (?) on Nabokov. Here’s why - I wanted to take Philos 100 along with a logic upper-div, but they only offer Philos 140B (intermediate logic - but the prerequisite is 140A). So, I’ll probably take a logic upper-div in the Spring. Anyway, here’s my plan -

Fall:
Philosophy 100 - Methods
Slavic 45
Slavic 134F
Berkeley Connect
Harry Potter DeCal - or maybe some other one?

(14 units)

Spring:

2-3 Philos upper-divs, with at least 1 being a logic course
Slavic 46
Potentially another Slavic upper-div, replacing one of the Philosophy upper-divs.
This depends - but I’d probably rather take 3 philosophy classes and Slavic 46.

(15 units)

That seems like a good transition - I’m wary about jumping into Philosophy upper-divs without taking Methods first. If I were definitely able to take 5 semesters at Cal, then I definitely would - assuming that is the case, I would be very on track to graduate, as my major in Philosophy doesn’t require too many more classes. I do need an AC course - but it should work out fine. 5 semesters translates to 19 classes. I’d likely take 11 Philos, 7 Russian Lit, and the 1 AC. That would be ideal for me.

Any meaning behind Cal Day is meaningless. Don’t read into it.

It’s open to the public. All can attend.

@goldencub,

You are correct. The unit ceiling does not come to play until you hit 130 units and the combination of the Philosophy major and your relatively low incoming unit count means you can get a 5th semester as long as you don’t overload on units during your first four semesters. Plan carefully though as the administration will be very unlikely to approve extra semesters because you simply don’t need it – very much a double edged sword.

You are also correct in that a graduating list is implemented. They can lock you out of registration if you overstay past your unit / term limits, but they can’t force you to graduate if you still are within your allotted terms.

As far as having at least one required requirement (Philosophy “core” reqs or AC) in your last semester, there are two points to consider:

  1. Financial aid has a qualifier that you have to be "progressing" towards a degree and this is (almost) always interpreted as being enrolled in at least one class labeled in your degree audit (DARS) as required for graduation. With that in mind, taking all non-required in your 5th+ semester will likely prevent you from receiving any financial aid for that semester (should you need it).
    1. Alternatively, meeting all the minimum graduation requirements (Primary major core courses & AC) before your final semester(s) allows you to apply for a "certificate of completion" which is essentially the same as a diploma for grad school applications / job opportunities but allows you to continue taking classes at Berkeley as an undergrad student. (Albeit, again, usually with no financial aid) This is often used for students looking to get additional research experience prior to going out to the industries.

Also as far as DeCals, you can ask the course facilitator to enroll you as non-credit student (AKA auditing) so that you can still participate in as many DeCals as you want without having them count against your unit leeway. A leeway of 4-5 units before the ceiling is not much and you will want to skim units whenever possible. Berkeley Connect unfortunately doesn’t have this option.

Lastly, your plan sounds good. In the spring you ideally want to finish the majority core philosophy courses first before going into the Russian Lit minor courses outside of Slavic 45/46 to prevent any future class conflicts (since Philosophy course offerings are on the leaner side), but it probably won’t matter for the majority of the possible scenarios you might face in your subsequent semesters.

Anyone hear anything regarding the leadership award?

@keurimja Nope, nothing…here’s hoping they update us tomorrow.

Just got the email:

"Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your application for The Leadership Award.

If you are a freshman applicant that was either denied admission or waitlisted at UC Berkeley for Fall 2016 or Spring 2017, you are no longer eligible for The Leadership Award.

If you are a Junior Transfer Applicant or admiited Freshman applicant, your application is still under review. You will receive notification from our office regarding your status by May 20, 2016. We are aware that this date is after the freshman “SIR” deadline.

Best regards,

-CAA Scholarships Team"

Same ^^

Lmao great…

Got that same email that sucks

18 to 14.8%. That’s a significant decrease in freshman acceptance rate… I hope the same not gonna happen on transfer admission :frowning:

Most likely will considering how many more transfer applications they received vs. spots available…

This could also be because they are making more seats for transfers in order to receive that extra funding

@TransferJ Are the two related to each other though? They’re from different pools, so I’m not sure that’d be the case. Hm. Anyways, last year there were around 17,000 transfer applicants and around 3,000 accepted students. Scary, haha especially if the trend is downward :expressionless:

@FT7325
They have received 4.7% more freshman applicants than last year but they accepted 1000 less than last year…
