Like I thought, here is what it says on applying for the Transfer Edge program:
“1. Be sure of your admittance to UC Berkeley and complete your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) by the deadline. You will be able to apply for Transfer Edge once you have completed your SIR.”
And again it states in bold:
“The online application for Transfer Edge opens on April 22, 2016.”

@Platosgooch oh interesting! Honestly I am probably alone in this thought, but I hope it does come out on the 29th because if I log into this site and suddenly see a bunch of people posting decisions and I am unprepared I will have a legitimate panic attack. I am not a fan of the unexpected haha.
@Grinsley
I don’t know man, I’d love to have Davis, UCLA, and Cal all get back to me on the same day!
@Platosgooch Actually, that might not be such a bad thing. I am really hoping from an acceptance from UCLA and Berkeley, Cal obviously being my top choice, but it would be nice to kill two birds with one stone and find out in the same day.
Plus, if I get rejected from UCLA (I am applying as Poli Sci, highly impacted among just about every other major there) I am going to be nervous as hell to hear back from Cal because the only other school I applied to was UCSB and I don’t even want to go there.
Although I imagine getting denied from UCLA and Cal on the same day would be waaaay worse then getting denied from UCLA one week and then Cal the next! Accepted or denied though, one thing is for sure: beer will be involved.
@Platosgooch hahah definitely. I have a bit of a deal going on with my mom. I applied to UCSB, LA, Cal, and a State Department internship. We decided that we will go out to a restaurant for each acceptance I get, in order of quality depending on the school, and the internship being the best one
I clicked on UCLA’s regents application earlier today to work on their essay prompt and I could have sworn the deadline said April 21 when I first opened the application. Now it says the 24th… Either the date changed or I’m delusional from lack of sleep as a result of 3 back to back midterms I had two days ago. Anyway, this got me thinking that there’s no way UCLA decisions can come out on the 22nd because of the regents deadline being the 24th. I could be wrong, but applying for a scholarship that’s due after the unofficial decision date seems rather fishy.
@ccAndronicus Interesting. Yeah, it seems like 2 days would be too little of an amount of time to apply to something as prestigious as Regents. Perhaps on Monday they will come out? I don’t know. All of these theories are driving me crazy, and past patterns seem to point to the 22nd…
@Grinsley Unless an invitation to apply for Regents is an automatic in… There goes another theory onto the list of never ending theories.
@eruditehooper,
Correct. I don’t know the specifics but I do remember that some low income subsidy (LIS) financial aid had eligibility requirements of being a full-time student (federally defined as 12 semester units minimum) for all semesters prior to transfer.
@Platosgooch & @Grinsley
Just an FYI, but Transfer Edge is pretty much automatic for every transfer that applies. They don’t “deny” people from the program, per say, but rather defer you to normal summer sessions. Additionally, the only difference between TE and traditional summer sessions at Berkeley are the tuition fees you pay. TE is at the “UC student” rate.
The application process is so that financial aid office can begin the extensive process that ensures you receive the discounted rate.
Regarding the Transfer Edge, one of the requirements for the financial aid is to have Berkeley in both 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 financial aid applications. I of course have Berkeley on my 2016-2017 app but not for my 2015-2016. So can I just edit my 2015-2016 application and resubmit? Or?
I didn’t know about the transfer edge program…and I’ve already paid for summer session.
Transfer edge seems cheaper than summer session and I may need to pay 100 cancellation fee to switch.
Is there a any cognitive science major here? I couldn’t find a single applicant in last year’s thread.
@Hiroaki0422 how did you apply for the summer session prior to your acceptation?
thanks
@venididicivici Anybody can enroll in summer sessions.
@paninichan,
Technically Summer 2016 is part of the 2015-2016 academic year so that financial information will be the most applicable – hence the requirement.
Are you planning on taking the the 6+ units minimum required to receive summer financial aid? If yes, then edit and resubmit.
@Hiroaki0422,
Apply if your taking at least 6 units! If everything clears at the financial aid office, they will refund you the difference at the conclusion of the Summer period.
@SDGoldenBear Yes. Thank you for answering my question. I’ve never had to edit my financial aid this late so I was wondering what the procedure is.
I went to cal day yesterday and met the guy who’s in charge of making admission decisions for my major and I kinda wanted to throw money at him or something so he’d tell me if I got in. So tired of waiting.
To those of you who have done more research than me, does anyone know how important pre-reqs are to Berkeley? I applied as a philosophy major but have only taken 1 phil class in my two years, and my CC doesn’t offer any phil classes that transfer over to Berkeley, hence why I didn’t take any. I spoke to a representative at Berkeley and she said I was basically screwed because of this, but my transfer counselor at my CC told me to chill and that the people on the phones at Berkeley hate everyone that calls, because he used to do that job too, except he did it for UCSD. I dont intend on following through with philosophy, I want to change to an econ major once I get there but I don’t have the pre-reqs for that completed either. My gpa is 3.86 though.
On top of all of this im now worried about UCLA too after my call with the Berkeley representative, however they only require 1 phil class as a pre-req and I took it, but that’s it. I feel like the bare minimum might not be enough (I applied as phil major at UCLA as well).
@“Darth Cornholio” Okay, first of all it’s nearly impossible to switch from something like Philosophy to Econ. Isn’t Econ impacted? Philosophy and Econ are in different divisions in L&S, too - so switching would be anything but easy. Maybe you should have applied to PoliEcon? Still, missing the prerequisites will make it unlikely anyway.
I think the Berkeley rep is correct that you are likely screwed because you only took one Philosophy class. UCLA is a possibility - but they look for demonstrated interest in the major. Your GPA is strong, but that’s probably not going to be enough.
I don’t think your transfer counselor knows what they’re talking about, honestly. It’s not that prereqs are important to Berkeley for Philosophy - most Philosophy majors don’t have any prerequisites. After all, very few schools offer courses that articulate. Still, you’re expected to take a few classes in your major at the very least. Why not submit a change of major request ASAP, switching to something like Rhetoric, that doesn’t have any prereqs at the CC level? That would probably give you better chances - but switching to Econ after you transfer is unlikely, even if you were to get in. Maybe @SDGoldenBear can elaborate on that. As I understand it, one can only change their major after admitted if the new major is not impacted, and all prerequisites are completed. I’m pretty sure it’s easier if they are in the same L&S division, but I know somebody who switched from Philosophy to PoliEcon. I think Econ is unlikely, though.
@goldencub Right after I got off the phone with the Berkeley rep I emailed them asking for a change of major from Phil to econ, and didn’t get a response. That was two and a half weeks ago. This is really disappointing to hear honestly because I put all my trust in my counselor with this one and he said that this was the way to go. My first semester I got a 3.0 gpa and have worked my ass off the past couple semesters getting only A’s to be what my counselor said was competitive and good enough to get in.
Do you think it would be better to email Berkeley AGAIN, asking for a change of major AGAIN, this time to the major that you recommend? At this point I’m really scrambling and feeling pretty down, I’m willing to do anything to make my dream come true.
