@bentoj3n Congratulations! That’s so awesome! Both are great, but I hear UCLA’s mass communication is better in almost every aspect. I think it’s cause it’s what mass communication is supposed to be. Media studies is more theoretical and history based according to my friends who applied to the same majors. For your case, UCLA seems to be the better choice if you’re set in majoring in mass communication. But both majors are great no matter what. Just look up what people have to say about media studies and compare it to what people have to say about mass communication. It seemed like night and day when I read about it not too long ago.
@UCTransfer567 Congrats! What UC are you transferring from? I’m planning on applying from a UC as well!
@ccctransferuc Thank you so much for the advice! Yeah, I heard UCLA’s communications major is super competitive and that the course programs are awesome. But Berkeley’s reputation as one of the top 5 public universities…ughughughughgghhh!
@bentoj3n I get where you’re coming from. Both have so much to offer. I know your field is very flexible, so I’m curious on what career path you want to take? It seems as though people in your field want to make it big in SoCal, which is why they choose UCLA or USC. I have two friends who transferred to Cal as media studies and three friends who transferred to UCLA as mass communications. The course offerings are very different. I suggest you take a look at that and see which school has the things that actually interest you.
Has anyone create a new thread for people who have chosen to go to cal?
Five semesters for me and my second major is Applied Math. Hope to see you at the Econ gatherings as they have a lot of information to give!
Speaking of which…here are some good resources for finance minded individuals that really want to hit the ground running:
Capital Investments Berkeley - http://www.ciberkeley.com/
Berkeley Investment Club - http://invest.berkeley.edu/
Berkeley Business Society - http://www.berkeleybusinesssociety.com
Ascend Berkeley - http://ascendberkeley.org/
Optmir Consulting Group - http://optimir.berkeley.edu/
Berkeley Finance Group - http://www.berkeleyfinanceclub.com/
Undergraduate Finance Association / Management Consulting Group - http://ufaumcg.com/
Undergrad Economics Association - http://www.berkeleyuea.com/
Cal Actuary League - http://actuary.berkeley.edu/
BBS & EUA are great sources for finding other peers to study and collaborate with. They also have specific “family” building events that help you find compatible mentors. Ascend has been huge in helping me network in preparation for life after Berkeley.
@SDGoldenBear Wow, appreciate your insight on the classes/professors! That’ll be helpful when enrolling in classes. Any other tips for making sure we get in to econ? Office hours, 1 on 1 tutoring, study tips, etc?
@forshevchenko Where have you been looking for on campus housing? I’m going to create the CalNet account today so that I can hopefully check out housing and sign up for CalSO… however, it’s not letting me create the CalNet ID.
For anyone else, are you having the same issue:
- When logged in to CalCentral you click “Berkeley CalNet ID” on “Future” tasks (after submitting SIR, this options shows)
- Then click “Get CalNet ID”
- On next page, you login with MAP
- Then says “You are not allowed to view this page.”
What… so confused!
I’m not looking for on campus housing. F that
too expensive and I don’t get any financial aid
@jonuni94 I’m having the same issue too
Same issues with CalNet. Maybe it just needs more time to register everything, between when we SIR and do that. Some systems can require 25 hours.

@SDGoldenBear I was admitted as Stats major and am interested in doing my applied cluster in economics and pursuing finance. It seems that there is a lot of competition to get into these clubs and whatnot, especially coming as a Stats major, not Econ/Haas. Is your double major purely to prepare for grad school, or are you interested in finance as well? What’s the job recruiting like for Applied Math/Stats with clusters in Econ?
Also, to double major, only 2 classes can double dip for each major, right? I was trying to figure out if I could feasibly double major in stats/econ but it seems impossible in only 4 semesters. How difficult was it in 5?
@goldencub Thank you for letting me know that! I tried editing the thread and it doesn’t let me do anything! I guess I’ll just start a new thread! Thanks!
Accepted!

Does anyone know when we get our packets in the mail ??
For capped majors such as Economics, the most important piece of advice is to register for the earliest CalSO. This is super important as you can’t enroll in classes until you meet the orientation requirement. This means that those who go to an earlier CalSO will enroll before those with a later CalSO and thus the early birds will have better choices on professors, class times, and, most importantly, guaranteed spots for their declaration course requirements.
You can enroll in up to seven units during the first phase of enrollment and as econ majors you absolutely need to Phase I your core requirements of either Stats 20/21/134 and Econ 100/101/A/B. Those specific courses will fill up quick and a couple of hours usually is the difference between an outright spot with a good professor and fighting to get a spot with a less desirable professor.
Other than that…what really helps is to get established with a smaller non-econ group / student org early.
Econ is isolated from other majors with it’s impacted and specialized courses. The nature of the major just makes it so that your most frequent contacts will almost always be Econ, Poli-Econ, and Haas majors. This “bubble” is hard to fix later on so finding an “inner circle” outside the major from a group / org will help keep your personal network from being too one-dimensional.
