UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

Hello everyone, just hoping to get friendly advice. I was accepted into UCB, UCLA, and UCI amongst other schools for chemistry. It came down to UCB and UCI and I think I’m ultimately going to attend UCI.

The reason is because I will be participating in paid research at UCI through the MSP program for the next two years and am hoping to be competitive for either graduate school or medical school once I get my degree two years from now. UCB has always been one of my dream schools and their chem program is one of the best in the nation. Am I making the wrong choice?

Hi, guys! If I have to contact Admissions, should I e-mail admissions@berkeley.edu or berkeleybound@berkeley.edu (this one was provided on CalNet)? Thank you!

@Carlosaavas You should go with your gut decision. Chemistry is ridiculously difficult at Berkeley. You can always apply to Berkeley’s graduate program for Chemistry! UCI is a great school anyway. You’re not making a terrible mistake.

@JacobfromCA You should be fine… I’ve met transfers who enrolled in upper-divs over the summer. I don’t think you’ll have much trouble at all.

@goldencub Thank you!

@Carlosaavas I think you should choose the university that fits your interest the most. For me, I decide to decline UCB Econ because they really don’t provide much research opportunities for me; this is important as my goal is to get a PhD.

I basically called every econ department on every school I got accepted to :))

Ok, I just got a rejection for my TAAP application. Feels good to know so I can move on to the next one!

Does anyone receive email from Berkerley about academic update

Did anyone here participate in the bridges program this past weekend?

Anyone else need to fill out the academic planner?

I’m in the process of rejecting all of my other admissions offers and I am more anxious then I was when I opened the decisions. I reviewed my application twice to make sure that I did not make any mistakes. And Berkeley won’t process our transcripts until after June 1st anyway. I just still feel like I am going to wake up tomorrow and Berkeley is going to be like “On second thought…”

But I know that I have to be a good person and open up my spots for the people in waitlist-limbo right now.

@tmcxpbs I suggesting calling the admission directly. If you start calling at 9:05am, the wait is approximately less than 15 minutes.

Is anyone here attending the reception in Pasadena tonight?

Is anyone attending the reception in Pasadena tonight?

Hey guys,

I have a million questions, so answers to any of them would help greatly. I am a first generation college student so I don’t really have anyone to help me through this process. I am surprised I was able to get this far.

  1. I got an email saying congrats on me getting EOP. This might be a dumb question, but what does this mean for me? What are the benefits?
  2. I called admissions to ask what I can do about potentially deferring until Spring; I was offered an internship position in Washington DC through the State Department and, as a poli sci major, this is something I really don't want to give up. They told me there is a form somewhere I have to fill out. Does anyone know about this? Am I better off contacting someone directly involved with my major?

Also, is there any backup plan I could do if they were to say no to me deferring? Does Berkeley offer any online classes? Could I maybe take an online class my first semester and do the internship and then come in the Spring?

  1. Is anyone in this thread looking into living off campus? Is there a facebook page or anything of people searching for roommates that anyone knows of? I have looked at all of the options for on campus housing and I am just not sure I want to do that.
  2. I see that it is not mandatory to attend Calso, but if we don't, we still have to make an appointment with an advisor, correct? Do I have to go in person to the school to do this?
  3. How do you guys know what classes you need to take already? I would like to see what classes I will need. Again, poli sci major.

THANK YOU!

@Grinsley I can answer a bit of that.
1.EOP has a bunch of benefits listed on their website, from what I can tell the best ones are co-op housing priority, some waived fees, and help preparing for grad school.

4. If you don’t attend CalSO they will email you at the end of June to complete an online orientation. Keep in mind that this is after everyone who attended CalSO and current students have begun to register-so if you can attend CalSO, I would. Particularly if you think your classes might fill up.

Anybody know if SSS (Student Support Services) Scholars Academy is worth applying for?

Guys I recently SIRed to Cal, but now UCLA has bumped my scholarship funding to 10k, including the regents scholarship, so the net cost of attendance for Cal and UCLA will be the same. IDK what to do. I’m a math major. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN CAL RELEASES ITS REGENTS SELECTIONS? Why these colleges gotta be like this lol?

@resonanx If you don’t mind me asking where are you choosing to attend? I’m also a fellow econ transfer!

@Grinsley

To answer #3, there is a Facebook page for off campus housing:

@Grinsley just replace *** with Facebook URL
