@TransferJ I got a scholarship for 3k from the college of engineering for getting in. It hasn’t been uploaded to my finances tab yet. They sent it through email. I am hoping they send some more over the summer to absorb the cost also.
@dailyd0n wow, congrats. I’m waiting to hear if I got anything, too.
So I’m planning to apply to on-campus housing to have a backup in case I can’t find a decent single in Berkeley. Leaning towards Wada’s apartments, but the Martinez Commons look nice as well. Same with Channing-Bowditch. I don’t know much about any of them, honestly - but they all were cheaper than the residence halls (granted, they don’t include a meal plan in the price).
Does anybody know anything about them? I hear Wada has lots of transfers.
My husband got $1000 so far from the engineering department too.
Channing-Bowditch is pretty nice. They’re close to campus, and close to Units 1&2 so you don’t miss the social aspect. There’s a pretty decent space, and lots of resources. I can’t really tell you about a regular sized room because when I got a tour it was of my friend’s place who is an RA there. I really like the kitchen space in the apartments, very roomy!
The Martinez Commons apartments are really nice too! They are fully furnished, and very modern looking. In an apartment I saw there were 4 rooms I believe (1 bedroom and bathroom downstairs, and 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs), you had a sitting area also (furnished), and a kitchen which was kinda small but reasonable.
I can’t say anything about Wada as I didn’t get a tour there, but I would say you’d be pretty well off with either Channing-Bowditch or Martinez Commons. I prefer Martinez because it’s fairly new and modern. It’s also across the street from Channing-Bowditch and Crossroads.
Hey guys I applied for housing and hoping on getting an apartment but what is the advantage of living on campus vs off campus (besides potentially cheaper rates)? How high are the off campus rates when the fall semester begins? Are the housing rates for on campus without the meal plans?
Does anyone here know how the parking situation at Berkeley is? I plan on going this Friday to declare my major, and given that I have to be on campus pretty early I’m worried about parking. Is it difficult to find any parking at all, or is there any public parking available near campus?
@Polemic Awful. Your best bet is to park at a nearby BART station ($3 all day) and take the train to the Downtown Berkeley station. Otherwise, you’ll likely accumulate parking tickets - all of the free public parking in Berkeley is limited to 2 hours, and they often check.
Edit: wait, you’re able to declare your major so soon? How?
Second edit: oh, if you’re worried about parking for just a couple of hours this Friday, you’ll be fine by parking in residential areas. If you’re planning to bring your car to Berkeley in the Fall, it’ll be rough.
@Polemic If I remember right, there is street parking close by the campus (but I went there when they were done with the semester). I think overall parking on campus should be open because finals week for them is this week.
@goldencub Unless transfer students are excluded from declaration this early, I believe we’ve been able to just go to one of the sessions (they’re on specific dates) and declare there. May 13th is the last session before Fall.

That link is for poli sci but refers to declaring a major for transfer students generally. See under “Transfer Students”.
@Polemic Interesting… Are there any tangible benefits of declaring this early?
@goldencub Declaring this early would allow you to register for upper-division courses during Phase I. Otherwise your only opportunity to get into upper-division courses for fall 2016 would be during Phase II (presumably after most/all upper-division courses or all of the good ones have been filled up). It’s probably important to declare ASAP for impacted majors, though maybe it isn’t as difficult as I expect to get into upper-divs during Phase II.
Do they give you discount for Bart? I was thinking to get a room in Oakland, but not after I saw the homicide map in Bay Area…

Hey, do you happen to know whether or not we have to complete 8 credits in philosophy at Berkeley or have 8 transferable philosophy credits in order to enroll in upper-division philosophy courses at Berkeley? I have already completed a bunch of philosophy courses at my CC, but none of them seem to transfer over (according to Assist).
@Hiroaki0422 Your UC Berkeley student ID lets you ride all of AC Transit for free (you just flash it at the driver when you board).
Does anyone know what our Berkeley emails are?
@arashid142 Some variation of your name.
Mine is my first and last name @berkeley.edu
Some will do first initial and last name, some might need some numbers, etc. Depends on how common the elements of your name are.
