On #2, they must be completed by spring … the end of spring. Yeah, just realized I accidentally put “required” on top of ambiguously wording it. My bad.
For those of you receiving Cal Grants, does it still show “ESTIMATED” instead of “OFFERED” in the financial aid section? I called a few weeks back and they said it’s normal but I have no idea now.
Thank you, got it. Also, can you list HS extracurricular as part of your ECs? Because I have seen a few people say they listed them and got in.
Unless they’re particularly relevant, they don’t care about what you did in high school. In general, they don’t care to see them. They want to see what you’ve done these last few years at community college.
Ok. Also, does Cal care when you take your classes? Because the guy at the bottom of this thread
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1900358-why-are-4-0s-rejected.html#latest
says he got rejected because he didn’t take enough poli sci classes his first semester even though he completed everything.
- Having extracurriculars will essentially never count against an applicant. Whether or not, they will be influential is up to the officers, but, unless an applicant is clearly lying or adding ridiculous information, then ECs will either benefit the applicant or not effect the decision. Therefore, there is never a reason to leave blank spaces in an EC portion of an application if you could include valid ECs. Most applicants were high school students a little over a year prior to applying so anything that would have been noteworthy then is still going to paint a good picture of who you would be now. Particularly if you graduated with awards or held leadership positions. It is always good to show a consistent history of achievement or ambition.
- You need two courses to get into Political Science at Cal. It is also not an impacted program. Maybe that poster was referencing UCLA or another UC? Otherwise, there will likely other factors at play. When they expect courses to be taken will obviously dependent on the program. You should have some prereqs done in the first year regardless to ensure that you are making the right decision with your major to begin with.
@sixsamurai Typically they don’t, as long as they’re finished by the end of spring. They do like to see some major pre-reqs completed by the end of fall (of the year you apply) so they actually have major pre-reqs to evaluate you on, but generally it isn’t an issue. It also depends on the school, the major, etc. I got into a very selective program at a very selective school and I had a major pre-req I was still finishing the spring before I transferred, as did a lot of other people.
question:
if you have a W in a ballet class and a C in a 1 unit exercise class, will that count against you? (this question also applies to stanford)
the ballet class was during my 2nd semester, back when i honestly didn’t know what a W was…i withdrew like a few days after the drop deadline.
and the C was due to absences because the class injured my back. i told my teacher about it and even had a doctor’s note saying i shouldn’t participate and clearing a lot of the days i was gone but i still got a C. :
i truly do love athletics, but these classes say the opposite lol. i also withdrew from a lab the semester after the exercise class because i was going to get a small foot surgery and i wasnt going to be able to wear closed toe shoes for several weeks and you can’t really redo labs if you’re not there once all the sections have completed them. i also wanted to mention this in my application but these all sound like such petty excuses.
i think the exercise/ballet classes are uc transferable. not sure how this affects stanford, do you have to report all the classes?
and just to clarify im not a student athlete. STEM major.
Any prospective CS transfers out there? I’ve been searching through these threads since I graduated high school 2 months ago and since I’m now in a cc student planning my transfer I thought why not join?
I recently met with a UC Berkeley Representative so if anybody has questions for me feel free to ask!
@otoribashi You may petition to have your grade removed from your transcript however, this depends on the school you attend. If your petition is denied, there’s always the additional comments section of your application regarding how you obtained these grades.
Just out of curiosity, for those who were admitted as CS (L&S) transfers, may you post the courses you took at your community colleges for each term?
Curious to see where you’ve found the CS 61 series :-?
@CALiiiii
Transfer student intending CS L&S major here.
CS major transfers cannot be directly accepted into CS major because no community college offers CS 70 equivalent course(CS advisor told me that) unless if you intend to double major in math, they will count your discrete math class (MATH55 equivalent) as CS 70. Also, as far as I know, only Laney college has CS 61A equivalent course. So 99 % of transfers take 61A and 70 in their first semester and declare the major if they get above 3.30 GPA.
@Hiroaki0422
Thank you! How about CS 61C, have most accepted transfers taken that class? And if you don’t mind answering, which prerequisites have you personally completed?
I would have part of CS 61B completed and I might be willing to enroll at Laney despite the 40 min drive but anything for Berkeley right? :(( I’m taking all math prerequisites at Syline College, part of CS 61B at the College of San mateo (since its the same district I’m able to take it without enrolling), and most likely CS 61A at Laney.
Also, would my application be looked down upon if I have prerequisites left in the spring instead of having them completed at Fall during the time I apply?
Just received an email from the vice chancellor regarding Think About It an online training module you have to complete by Oct. 15. It says to go to CalCentral to complete it but I can’t find anything and I go directly to the website and enter my email and nothing. Does anyone know what to do?
Thanks

Nope, don’t know what to do. I’m sure we’ll hear more soon. Plenty of time.
For people who are receiving Cal Grants, did it disburse today? Everything else including Pell Grants and loans have been disbursed but my Cal Grants is still nothing. This is getting worrisome. I can’t even get in touch with the office because they basically took out their phone cords.
Friendly reminder that Bear Pact is Tuesday and attendance is mandatory.
Side Note: Are we suppose to be able to log into Bear Facts by now? I still don’t have access.
I’m planning to apply as Math(Applied) this semester from a CC. I will most likely have gpa of 3.82, only thing I concern of is that the B I got in Calc 2. Do you think I’ll still have chance? Not related but I got all As in my compsci classes(since I wanted to do computer science first), and I will finish IGETC by spring. - International Student
Wait, what’s Bear Pact?
@sixsamurai A mandatory orientation on things like sexual assault. It’s required. If you missed it, just say you were turned away for being too full (if you’re asked). They’re planning on hosting another one at a later date because people were gone, were turned away because of capacity issues, etc.
