UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

I hand delivered one a couple weeks ago, still shows initiated.

It just takes a while I think as they processes tens of thousands of these things.

@tiger144 @briank82 My transcript which I had mailed out about 3-4 weeks ago is still INITIATED while my other transcript which was mailed out only 1 week ago is now showing as RECEIVED. What should I do?

@Philosoup Well I sent in my HS transcripts way before my college ones and the college ones were finished first. I’m still waiting on the HS ones to be completed but I would just forget about it. The’ll contact you if there’s a problem. Alternately you could contact your admissions adviser. I’ve been assigned one and you should have been too.

My transcripts have been received but they’ve not yet been moved to my completed tasks tab. Are other people seeing the same?

@Philosoup Probably not worry about it too much. I have things that were requested by UCB probably 2 months ago … still initiated. Give it time and see what happens.

I’ve got 8 red transcript tasks and am not worrying about it.

They will email you before assuming that you did not follow the instructions. If you have no been contacted, then they either have not gotten to your transcripts yet or everything is coming along fine.

I know it’s super late but is there any way someone can chance me for Fall 2017?

I am currently at a CC with the intent on transferring to UCLA and Berkeley.
My GPA is 3.68.
I have completed all of the prereqs.
I have finished IGETC.
I plan on writing about how I was a poor student in high school, received my GED and went on to achieve good grades and completely change the course of my life.
My EC’s include volunteer work, PTK, speaking to incoming students at the alternative school I went to, political science club and a full time job since I was 17.
Oh and my major is Poli Sci.
Thank you for any kind of input!

@poliscimajr your GPA is fairly close to the average transfer stat (around 3.77 I believe). See if you can raise it this fall (it’ll look like a good upwards trend too). Finishing prereqs is good but finishing IGETC is great. Cal doesn’t admit to major for college of letters and science so major gpa isn’t as important. your activities look promising, so make sure that you focus on your personal statements to really connect your ec/resume with your academic goals or personal drives. it seems like you’re a competitive applicant so just keep up the good GPA this fall!

Does anyone have any tips for finding off-campus housing? I’m on craigslist and the fb transfer and housing pages, but I know there are other renting sites around. Any tips?

@poliscimajr you can find a great deal of transfer information and statistics by going to the UC admission site. You will be able to find the statistics about transfer admission rates, general grade point averages for transfers and probability of admission for your major. Further, you will be able to find out the admission statistics for your specific school in each of the past 20+ years at each of the campuses. So if you are going to Santa Monica College the admission to UCLA is pretty strong. There is a geographic preference on transfer. That doesn’t mean it’s the only factor, but you can find the transfer statistics for each community college at each UC campus. You may also be able to determine what the admission statistics are for each major. For example, the transfer acceptance rate into Haas at Berkeley is very low. So you would need to find the relevant statistics for Political Science at UCLA and Berkeley. GPA data is also available but more difficult to correlate to admission chances. Only overall averages are available and that makes it tough to narrow what is acceptable and what isn’t. Further, UC attempts to balance the socioeconomic demographics of its admitted classes. Do not underestimate that point. Diversity is important to the schools.
All of that said, Political Science is a popular transfer major at both UCLA and UC Berkeley. I think your GPA is borderline however if you are at Diablo Valley College your shot a Berkeley is better than coming from PCC in Pasadena. If you are at Santa Monica College you chance at UCLA is stronger than if you are at De Anza College in NorCal. All of this notwithstanding, there is no reason you aren’t a reasonably good candidate at any school. Boost your GPA by taking easy online classes. Once you’ve checked off your reqs. just go for the numbers. Good luck.

@poliscimajr I was accepted for the fall and have very similar stats. I also am majoring in political science and I applied with a 3.68 gpa. I was a bit worried about it being so low but in the end I I think my EC’s put me over the top. In line with the major I was a student senator at my JC and I wrote about my experiences in my essay. Per the CAL rep make sure you tell them specifically why you are interested in the major for the first prompt. That’s what they are looking for and in the second you have a bit more freedom as to what you want to say. Your gpa will be higher than mine so you should be okay there. I would try to get involved in student government if its not too late. I think you have a good chance. Good luck!

On another note has everyone had their transcripts clear yet? I’m still waiting on my HS one.

Does anyone have a Phase II date earlier than Aug 1?

When I spoke with a L&S adviser last month, they said that we should expect to be assigned an appointment between July 25-27.

My most desirable phase II course is slowly slipping away. :-<

For new “traditional” transfers (meaning not Assisted/Disabled, Student Athlete, Regents Scholar, etc.), I believe the earliest Phase II appointment was today at 3PM. Most will typically start on Monday morning though.

@TheVisionary I’m in the L and S department and I have the 29 as my phase 2 date.

@tiger144 The betrayal.

Well, I suppose that spending the last hour searching for back up classes was not a waste.

So I went on CalCentral and now have a HOLD on my account because I was just billed my tuition of approx $8k. However, I’m heavily dependent on financial aid and the net amount I’m supposed to pay for the entire school year is $8k. Anyone know what’s going on?

The bill is due Aug 19th and financial aid is released ten days before class starts (24th). You’re fine.

Just 3 questions.

  1. Do they look at grades from non-transferable classes
  2. If I'm applying to transfer in the the fall, can I still finish required classes in the following spring semester
  3. Do they care how many credits I take per semster

@sixsamurai

  1. They won't be factored into your GPA but all grades will be reported. If you have a handful of failing or low grades in non-transferable classes, they would see them and it naturally wouldn't help your chances any. Manly, though, they'll be looking at your UC transferable GPA.
  2. They must be required by spring. Anything beyond that, like summer, will not be considered. A lot of people are still finishing required classes in spring, so I wouldn't worry about it. It's beneficial to have a handful of your major pre-reqs done before spring though so they have something major-related to evaluate you on.
  3. Depends on the situation, I suppose, but generally no. If you're talking 20+ units, knock yourself out. If you're only taking 5 units per semester, it might be in your best interest to explain why you can't handle a full load or what is limiting you from taking more units.

Ok cool, just to clarify for #2 you mean they must be completed by the end of spring right?
