UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@nidalee I’ve met some people who actually got into Berkeley with average GPAs for physics and they all had stellar personal statements, so depending on yours it may make or break you. I know admissions will like the rise in your GPA and hopefully that works in your favor, good luck!

Ahaha I’m gonna try to take all P/NP my first semester, except for Introduction to Empirical Analysis and Quantitative Methods…but mostly because it’s for my major, and because I got a 4 on the AP Stats exam, and I hear it’s very similar.

Im on assist and it seems as though UC courses are worth more credits than their corresponding CC course? If most courses are 4-5 credits, that could mean we’d only have to take like three courses a semester?

@solostish The norm is 3-4. For reference, I plan to take 3 my first semester (2 in my major), and probably Berkeley Connect + maybe a decal.

Classes are structured differently from CC. You will have 3 hours of lecture per week, and 1 hour of discussion per week for the general 4 unit class at Cal. Naturally, more things will be covered in lecture, and more is expected of you. CC classes are organized in a lecture + discussion format - so that’ll be a change.

Has anyone received any emails from UCB saying they received your application and to sign up for their MyAdmissions page? Just curious.

@boxandwhiskers I haven’t. Also, the email I got from LA didn’t invite me to create my MyAdmissions page. Only UCD and UCI so far.

UCLA didn’t ask to create MyAdmission page, but you can log in there with your Application ID, name and date of birth. Much easier than creating all those pages with other UCs.

I got emails from UCLA, UCI and UCD, nothing from UC Berkeley yet, let me know when you guys get it

Oops

@goldenclub Oh no… I didn’t do that at all either… That got me worried haha.

Hello fellow prospective Bears! I’m new to this and I was wondering if you guys would be able to chance me.
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.73
Educational Prep Programs: TRIO,EOPS,AVID (AVID was in high school)
Volunteer and Community Service: feed the homeless with friends, volunteer at a church organization that provides for the homeless, partake in beach clean ups regularly
Work Experience: have worked at a pizza place since my sophomore year of high school (about 35 hours per week)
Awards and Honors: listed 5 scholarships which I have received
Extracurricular Activities: Political Science Club Secretary, Pre-Law Club President, Interact Club Secretary (in high school), Associated Student Body (in high school; I was class treasurer during 9th grade, class secretary during 10th grade, and ASB historian during 12th grade), and a Cheerleader for three years in high school, in which I was captain.
I am also a first generation college student. I really hope I get accepted to UCB! I am in love with this school.

@lovelyyliz You sound like a great candidate  the department poly sci is in has a 23% acceptance rate, but if you go to a CCC I think you got this  Your gpa (which isn’t low) might drag you down if the average is higher than that for this year, but that is just speculation!

Question for political science majors: Do you guys know if we can use our AP Euro credit to cover the history requirement? Thanks

@lovelyyliz I’m sure you’ll get in, if you will have completed IGETC / all major prep by the end of your Spring term. It seems the average for PoliSci admits hovers around a 3.7-3.8, from what I’ve observed.

@Molisha yes, I attend a CCC  I hope that the GPA spectrum is the same as last year! Since the range was from 3.66 to 4.0

@goldencub yes, I will have completed IGETC by spring  now I’m just anxious for April to come!

Would any of you happen to know how it would work if we want to double major? I have only expressed that I want to be a political science major, but I also want to major in chicano studies. I have taken some classes in my CC that would count towards chicano studies at UCB, but not enough for a degree.

@lovelyyliz Check assist.org, plug in your CC’s agreement with UCB for Chicano Studies, and try to complete all of the requirements (there are 4 total) by the end of the Spring. If you have all lower div requirements for the major, then you can petition to double major once there - just talk to your UCB counselor about it if you are admitted.

Because both PoliSci and Chicano Studies are in L&S, it should be fairly easy.

You can also do a minor in Chicano Studies if that doesn’t work out.

Also, if your CC doesn’t offer all 4 of the classes, you won’t be penalized for anything you miss. Just try to complete everything you can - even missing 1 requirement probably won’t be held against you for the double major, but you need all lower-div requirements completed to declare both majors. So it’s best to complete all that you can at CC by the end of the Spring term.

@goldencub So then it would be a matter of expressing that I also want to major in Chicano studies until I get to Berkeley? I have only taken about two classes in my CC that count towards Chicano Studies, so at this point I don’t know if it would make more sense to just put this second major off for a while because it would be unrealistic for me to take any Chicano Studies classes next semester at my CC since I’m already going to be taking six classes.

@lovelyyliz Yes, but as far as I’m aware, you pretty much need to have all the lower-div requirements completed to apply for a double major. Perhaps if you took the two classes you need over the summer at Berkeley?

I don’t know the logistical details, so it’s really best to talk to a counselor, or email Berkeley about it. I do know that, because you would be admitted into L&S, and because CS is not impacted, it would probably be easy to do - but you will need all lower-div requirements completed. I don’t know if not taking them at CC will be held against you.

@goldencub So I’m trying to figure all of this out, and it’s super confusing. The CC that I attend offers a degree in Chicano Studies, but it is not a transferable degree. It is just an associate of arts degree. However, the classes which you have to take in order to obtain that degree ARE transferable. Assist.org does not have Chicano Studies as an area of study to select when I input my CC. I was attempting to compare the lower division classes that you need in Berkeley for Chicano Studies to the ones offered in my CC, and they don’t seem similar at all. I was thinking that I would probably have to take lower division classes in Berkeley regarding Chicano Studies, but I have no clue if they allow that.

@goldencub nevermind, got it figured out now  Chicano Studies is just listed under a subsection of Culture in my CC, that’s what was making it confusing. Guess all of the classes are transferable after all, thank you so much!
