UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

@booroot Chem here (CoC) Deciding w/Columbia/Penn, leaning Cal right now

Breadth classes you might honestly do the worst in. If you’re a physics major, there’s usually a reason why you’re not majoring in English, so an Arts and Literature breadth might suck for you, especially if everyone else in the class is an English major.

Planning to Chemistry or chemical engineering major? We are out of state Are you in state or out of state?
Are you planning to come on Cal day

Bowles is available to anyone who wants to apply! The new application period for freshmen is now open here:https://bowleshall.fluidreview.com/ and closes April 25 by midnight. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who is considering it (I am a current freshman who lives here). Let me know if you have any questions!

Bowles and Foothill: which one is closer to engineering classes? How many minutes to walk to classes?

@coolweather it depends. Foothill is literally about a block from the main EECS building Cory and the other main Engineering buildings like Soda, Etcheverry and Sutardja Dai. But outside of labs and some discussions, your first 2 years could be all over campus. For CS folks, all the main lower division lectures will be held at Wheeler Hall in the center of campus. A lot of Math is in Evans (Math home building).

Physics lectures usually are in LeConte (Physics home building) or Pimental; Chemistry is in Latimer (Chem home building) and Hildebrand which are all closer to Bowles. But then you other classes and discussions could easily be anywhere, at least for your non-major classes. If you take the first Cognitive Science class for example, depending on semester, it really bounces around - from Li Ka Shing on the northwest corner of campus, to Hearst Mining by the Engineering buildings to Haas Faculty on the southeast side.

From Foothill to say the Cory Engineering building would literally be no than 2 minutes, but would take longer coming back because part of the trip becomes a really steep uphill climb.

@Expedited Can you please pm me? I have some questions.

I have 2 boys in Cal CoE. My S1, non EECS, will graduate in May (hopefully!). He struggled the first year, low GPA, but he never gave up, worked hard. Hard work pays off, he has a few job offers before graduation. So, for the incoming freshmen, don’t ever give up if you struggle the first year, study with partners and help is readily available but you need to take the initiative.

My S2 is a second year EECS Regents scholar. For him, the biggest benefit is priority registration, to be able to get into the classes of his preferences. He didn’t take priority housing because he wanted to live with his friends. He is a tutor in one of the 60s classes, so if people need help, it’s there. Our high school didn’t offer AP CS, but he took an intro programming class in a local UC campus. His advice to people who want to study EECS/CS but never have any programming experiences is to take at least some online classes.

They both really like Cal and the people they meet there. We are a religious family from suburbs and they are active in campus fellowships and never experience any discriminations because of their beliefs. They play intramural sports, are active in some clubs, go to the city with friends, and even watch some Warriors games. So it’s possible to have a social life outside of academics. They are never bothered by the protests, because they are not interested and they don’t feel being forced to do anything they don’t like.

I know not every student likes Cal and yes, the academics is very challenging, but my sons really enjoy their lives there, and I want to provide some first hand positive experiences for those who are wondering.Go Bears!

Hi, so I was just sending my college transcripts I took at high school and saw that the grade of the college class I was taking last semester was reported blank instead of in progress. I am not sure what happened or if there wasn’t an in progress option for it but is it okay to had that as a blank grade instead of usual in progress if the grade was not out during the application when they get the transcript now.

What are you talking about?

@coolweather I was just checking back my original UC app before I sent the transcript and it seems that one of my grades for senior classes was reported blank instead of in progress (I don’t remember what happened). I am not sure if it is the same as in progress.

Bank or in progress probably has the same meaning: no grade available.

You were admitted. That counts. The grade matter will be sorted out when you are enrolled for classes.
The admission portal will be no longer relevant.

You will need to send in all your official transcripts for each HS and college attended. It has to be into Admissions by no later than June 30. What is stated on there is what counts.

My daughter already submitted housing applications and created a CalCentral account for me last night.
You guys should do it ASAP if you decided to attend UCB.

Today, Cal Day, is the only day out of the year where you get to go inside and see any dorm. Pretty important if you are undecided on a dorm and wanted to get a vibe on whichever ones you are interested in.

@ProfessorPlum168 I already sent my college transcripts last night since they are complete. I was just confused why my first semester senior colleges course has a blank grade instead of saying in progress and wondering what it means. (It was the only course I took at that college and I don’t remember if in progress option was unavailable for it)

Where did you send to? Did you follow CalCentral instructions for newly admitted students?

@coolweather I sent it to UC Berkeley undergraduate admissions and followed their instructions. I was just checking the uc application before I sent them yesterday.

@ProfessorPlum168 How hard is it to get the dorm I want? I heard it is random but we also have to rank what we want?

Your odds pretty much depends on what your top choices are and what others are choosing. If your fifth choice is any dorm, any room configuration, you will be guaranteed a dorm as long as you turn in your application before the deadline. The lottery is completely random unless you are Regents - they get first choice. For example, if a triple at Unit 2 was your top choice, there’s probably a 100% chance you would get it. But if you wanted a single at Blackwell, your odds probably wouldn’t be that good.

In general, singles are very rare, triples are least preferred. Doubles, and quads at Foothill generally are the most popular I would think. But then again, some people might like triples, so one person’s junk might be another person’s treasure. So be sensible in making your choices.
