Hi. guys. I am one of those who applied to Mechanical Engineering major. I would like to know applicants’ stats for different types of Engineering. If you are one of those who applied to Engineering, I will be thankful if you guys can tell me your stats.
In your stats, I would like to know:
Which Engineering?
GPA: ( Unweighted/ UC/ uncapped weighted)
SAT or ACT score
SAT subject test score
APs you took
Activities, including leadership position you are holding
Award and honors
Community Service or some intern.
Job
Applied or will apply for Financial aid?
Received LOR or not?
Thank you guys. If you can’t answer all questions, it is still fine. I will be thankful if you can fill in all answers you can.
Hi! I applied UC Berkeley Chemical Biology, even though it’s not an engineering major, but it uses engineering concepts. I’ll probably switch to CHEM Engineering. Can you share your stats? Thanks
GPA: UW 4.00 W 4.56 (9-11)
ACT: 31 C (30E, 34M, 26R, 33S, Essay 9)
SAT Subject Tests: Math 1 770, Math 2 770, Chemistry 700
@PWANG96 .Wow.It look like you’ve got a really good stats. I think you may even be eligible for RCSA honors program.
Here are my stats
Mechanical Engineering
GPA: UW 3.91 W: 4.3 I took many summer school classes so I can take more science during the school year. All summer school social studies were regular class, and I also have been taking Orchestra every year, so I gues I have two less AP classes for 10-11 grade.
my ACT score is 31 like your score. However, I got 36 on math, and 33 on science.
Didn’t take SAT test
However, I took SAT subject exam. 800 for Math level 2, 770 for physics, and 730 for Chemistry.
APs are Economics( both Macro and Micro). My school names the class AP Economics for full year instead of separating two parts.
Calculus BC( I have subscores for AB from BC sitting)
Chemistry
Physics C( again, E and M and Mechanics are combined to full year class at my school)
Environmental Science
Psychology
Stats
Extracurricular:
Baseball: Varsity only for freshman year with all-state. After, got into summer ball program Later, also got into one of really good showcase/ prospect program. Team was in fall league with D3 college teams. Got invitation for Area Code baseball tournament with MLB coaches. All American game by perfect game invitation. Got scout offers from some of Minor League teams and D1 schools, none of the good engineering school.Didn’t accept any . I am not sure if I am gonna do baseball at college plus I would be willing to play only for school I want to attend.
President for School’s Acappella team.
Internship at a small international engineering company
Orchestra at my high school
National Honor Society
Math Club member: participated in many competitons, and made up to several final rounds.
second place for one of national math competition.
Volunteer: Volunteer at a library in my county. Every year, 200+ hour. Got selected to be Volunteer of the year every year.
Honors and Award
a lot of things I wrote above include my honors and award already.
Chinese Quiz Bowl state competition 3rd place.
AP Scholar and Summa Cum Laude
School did not give me Scholar Athlete because I played baseball for school team only in my freshmen year.
not applying for financial aid
Got Letters of Recommendation letter request.
Thanks again for posting your stats, and you can also see my stats.
@PWANG96
By the way, can you also share your thoughts after you view my application?
On my actual application, I did not really focus much about my baseball career. I focused more on my math interest, Engineering intern, and my Engineering interest. My Baseball career would be great if trying to become a Professional player. However, it is just my hobby.
@hansomeboy Our stats are somewhat similar. Honestly, you’re more qualified than I am. I feel like your internship at the international engineering company is going to help your application a lot! And your baseball achievements as a high school athlete is unbelievable. For my UC Prompt 2 essay, I focused mostly on my running career and I related it to life lessons. Even though you didn’t really focus much about baseball on your application, I believe you’re a strong applicant.
Btw, I was looking at UC Berkeley Class of 2019 admission stats, those who got accepted have average ACT of 31 and average unweighted GPA of 3.91. So, I’m sure you’re a really strong applicant for UC Berkeley.
@PWANG96
Thanks for replying to me.
I also think we have a lot of similar things. However, my weighted and unweighted gpa is too low compare to your weighted and unweighted gpa, so I am really concerned. It is also surprising that you took that many AP classes and got all A’s while doing both cross country and track. I could not really relate baseball to big lesson at all. you also have many awards with your running career, and it is very impressive that you could connect running to life lesson.
I also know only extremely smart people at my school get research interns at University, and they all got into really good schools. So, you must have been really smart at your school.
To your question, I live in Michigan. I applied to Michigan at Ann Arbor and Purdue and got accepted to both.
UIUC comes in Feb. and I applied to Carnegie Mellon for regular decision but I am thinking of withdrawing mine.
You told me that Berkeley’s accepted applicants have average of ACT of 31 and unweighted GPA of 3.91 . However, I think it will be higher for Engineering.
My question to you would be then, how about you?
Where else did you apply? Do you live in California?
@hansomeboy It is really nice talking to you. I am from California. I also applied to CMU. I applied to Northwestern, Stanford, Dartmouth, Brown, USC, and 7 UCs. My parents want me to stay in California, and all the top schools are crapshoot for me. Actually, I also applied to UMich Ann Arbor, got deferred EA.
@PWANG96 . It was really nice for me to talk to you too.
I know U of M just defers so many out-of-state students. With your stats, you should definitely make U of M. U of M thinks many top students from out-of-state just apply to them as back up school. So, they defer a lot of high stats applicants from out-of-state.
feel free to ask me if you have questions about U of M.
@PWANG96
At first, I am going into Mechanical Engineering and CMU is not really well known for Mechanical Engineering.
Reputation of Michigan and CMU are similar for Mechanical Engineering. For Michigan, I get in-state tuition, but for CMU, it is so much more expensive, so I would be picking Michigan even if I get accepted.
Third reason would be I look forward to do a lot of motorsports related activites at college, and CMU motorsports size is way too small, and Michigan has tones of motorsports related activities.
Those are some of general reasons that I can pull out right now.
@PWANG96
I am working on FAFSA.
When you were filling out UC Application, did app. have questions regarding finanical aid?
I am just worrying if I said I do not need financial aid when they asked if I need financial aid.
I know they asked about fee-waiver, but I don’t think they asked me about financial aid.
@hansomeboy So I applied to UMich and got deferred EA. Some people on CC are talking about sending Letter of Interest… Should I send one? Will sending one increase my chance? Thanks
@PWANG96 .
good to see you again.
I am pretty sure it will help. a lot of students that graduate from my high school attend UMich every year. Last year, I know a lot of people got deferred, and they sent their letters of interest. A lot of people who sent appeal letter got accepted later. Some people I know even got their acceptance in late January.
What i’ve been hearing from a lot of people is that UMich does not want to accept the students that are just applying to UMich as safe school.
I am very positive that your application stats is a lot better than UMIch standards.
So, if you send your letters of interest saying that you have intent to attend UMich, I think you can get acceptance to UMich.
@hansomeboy Who should I send my letter to? Regional Counselor? Email or an actual mail? And what should I include in the mail? Please give me a general idea of the letter.
@PWANG96 . I would recommend sending your letters to regional counselors first.Send your email, not replying to deferral letter. I recommend having some attractive title, so they would read yours over others. I heard a lot of times they do not really respond to you with actual hand typed reply. However, based on what I heard from a lot of teachers and others is that it would kind of look rude to send your email to someone else before sending to regional counselor since regional counselor is the one who takes care of your business before others. So, even if they do not respond to you, send your letter to regional counselors first, and later send your emails to other professors.
Try to find some professors that have done some researches related to field you would like to study. If you find one, contact them with email, or sometimes actual handwritten letter. I heard some people saying try to meet them. However, it is not option since you live in California. Try to explain them researches you would like to do with them, future, career at UMich, what you would like to do post-graduation with the field you find interesting. Most importantly, why UMich over any other schools. It would be similar for letter to regional counselor too. try to tell them whatever you want them to know. your detailed plan with activities at UMich would be great, and why you can’t pick schools other than UMich, or maybe some special background. It is important that you tell them you have preparations for college, and you really want to attend UMich, what kind of students you will be.
Those are some of general stuffs I would put in. I hope this helps, and my idea also makes sense to you. You really have nothing to lose, so use my info as your base info and put your own opinion and all things you would like to put on top of it.
However, I feel like you will be fine. Last year, at my high school, a lot of people who do not even have high performance got in at early action, and a lot of people who have high stats got deferred early action. many of hig stat applicants withdrew application after getting accepted to their top schools, and most of rest got into UMich. So, I think you still have high chance of getting. There are several people who have similar stats as you at my high school. They got into their dream school, but got deferred to UMich.
Maybe, Berkeley will get you in.
@PWANG96 .
Hope my answer helps.
I would like to ask you something,
I know Berkeley has much better reputation in engineering than UMich, and I will most likely be attending berkeley with acceptance to berkeley.
For your major, I am not really sure about those. However,
if you get accepted to Berkeley and UMich at the same time, aren’t you going to attend Berkeley??
