One thing I’m noticing on these UC threads is that some people apply for, and are admitted to, basically every UC. I understand that people want options, but as a parent who has seen how much more difficult and competitive it has become over the years to get into a good college, I’m wondering if the UCs need to set a limit on the number of campuses to which one can apply.
The number of people applying to each will continue to grow every year, but the number admitted will not. Kids already have to go to ridiculous lengths to get admitted, and if you’re an introvert – forget it.
I don’t think they will limit the number because they want to show selectivity, so gotta get that denominator up. That said, one of my students got into every UC last year except UCSD. We were kind of surprised. Why that one? We joke however, that that was the one where DD wouldn’t even get out of the car, because she didn’t like all the cement buildings. And we figured they must have had a camera on her and saw that. haha
I have a question for in state people who received the emails yesterday…what area of Cali are you from? On Reddit the majority I saw were from SoCal…any other regions? NorCal?
The UC gets money for each application to each school. Since the application is identical, it’s as easy for the kids to check as many boxes as they want, and then get their parent’s credit card to pay the fee. Sure there are fee waivers, but the barriers to getting them are tough, and most don’t apply.
I agree there should be a limit. But I don’t see it happening. As they say in Vegas, “easy money.”
Before 1985 UCs only allowed you to apply to one campus, which really sucks if you don’t get in for whatever reason. The only thing that limits how many schools you can apply to is the common App which is capped at 20 schools. Also I got the emails and I’m from SoCal, near LA.
It would be difficult to set a limit when the acceptances are so uncertain. While I think applying to ALL is overkill it makes sense to apply to your local UC, a more safe acceptance and a reach. My own kids both applied to 3 and ultimately didn’t/won’t got to any but so little Ian for certain.
I applied to a lot of UC’s because my stats were really low and below average at each one. I was scared I wouldn’t get into any and didn’t want to take my chances. I wanted to be able to go to the best uc I could
yes they do. when you do a program with the college you’re applying to, your application kind of gets put in a separate pile. when it goes into that pile admissions will read it just a bit differently and take into consideration that you did the program. i did Experience UC Berkeley, which is also a summer college program, and at the end we had to send in our UC application ID number to our advisors so they could send it to admissions, so admissions could then get our applications and read them separately.
