If he is interested in the Mech E major, this is the COE process for change of college (which would include adding a major in COE if you are not already in COE): Change of college - Berkeley Engineering
Eligibility
Must have been admitted to UC Berkeley as a first-year student
Must have completed at minimum the freshman year curriculum for your intended major, with in progress the requisite number of additional courses to be on track
Must have completed at least 2 semesters of letter grades at Berkeley. Note that Incompletes could negatively impact your eligibility
Must be able to complete degree in 8 semesters
Must have R&C part A completed or in progress by 3rd semester, and must have R&C B completed or in progress by 4th semester
IEOR: Must have completed at least 2 letter graded math classes at Berkeley. This two-course requirement cannot be met with exam scores or transfer work
GPA requirements
BioE and BioE/MSE: Minimum UC technical and overall GPA of 3.4
Energy Engineering: Minimum UC Technical and overall GPA of 3.3
All Other Engineering Sciences: Minimum UC technical and overall GPA of 3.2
All other majors: Minimum 3.0 technical and overall UC GPA
Also, looking at the first year requirements for the MechE major (referenced in the above requirements), I see the following courses listed in the first year curriculum:
Chem 1A
Engin 7
Engin 26 (note, this is a 2 unit course typically taken primarily by MechE majors, it’s possible they may be flexible on this for change of college / major, I don’t know, or maybe there’s a way to make it up)
Math 1A
Math 1B
Physics 7A
R&C A and B
I’m guessing your bear already has the math and physics covered and possibly the chem, since he’s a Physics major. Does he have Engin 7?
Thank you for that. He did find that he would need two semesters completed before he could apply for a simultaneous degree in letters and sciences and engineering. The other requirements are met. He’d prefer to do a concurrent masters, but we’re not finding any programs like that at Cal.
Yes, it would seem so. Not that he would choose Davis over Berkeley if he had it to do over again, but that physics EE plus one program looked pretty awesome.
Does anyone know if continuing students need to be enrolled in the minimum 12 units before financial aid will show in CalCentral? My Sophomore Bear is currently enrolled in 10 units for fall. We filled out fafsa and there is no financial aid yet showing in CalCentral or in webgrants4students. The last two years we have qualified for Middle Class Scholarship.
My son used Daniel P. from Wyzant for ochem about 4 years ago. He did about 5-6 sessions and liked him. He works out of Orinda I believe. Don’t know if he still tutors.
And note this last line -
§ UC Berkeley matriculated students who wish to drop a class after the deadlines listed above should consult with their College Advisor.
Who would my bear contact regarding the summer course instructor was not a professor but a reasearcher/ graduate student and is not happy with her final grade and lack of communication. Is there a dept chair she can reach out to? the class was Organic Chemistry
TIA
Has she contacted the instructor? That should be her first stop. But unless there was an actual mistake, likely the instructor will not agree to a grade change. If there was a mistake (something correct was marked incorrect, an error in calculation), then definitely bring that up to the instructor. After that, every class taught by a GSI has an instructor of record who supervises the GSI. You should be able to find that information when you look at the course listing (usually it lists the instructor of record as the instructor, even though the course is actually taught by someone else). That would be your second stop after contacting the instructor director. However, again, unless there is a verifiable mistake, it will be hard to get a change. Your third stop would be the department chair, but you should proceed in order: GSI, instructor of record, and then department chair.
