UC Berkeley Class of 2028 Official Thread

Yes. It is because they opened the new College of Data Science.

Can we expect more admittance for CS/DS this year under new CDSS?

what do these acronyms mean??

A post was merged into an existing topic: Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Waitlist Discussion

I actually think this might be slightly misleading for students. These are no longer L&S high demand majors, simply because they aren’t in L&S. They are now in a separate college (CDSS), which will presumably have a low overall admit rate. Nobody knows how admission will work in CDSS going forward (whether they’ll be admitting by major or at the college level).

We don’t know. This information has been kept under wraps so far.

Yes, they will. CS/DS will be admitteddirect to major and applicants will have to indicate CS/DS as their major of choice on the UC application.

Computer Science and Data Science. College of Data Science.

Very true and you make a great point which I did not consider.

What I have heard (from what campus ambassadors are told) is that going forward (that is, admission season 2025+), all details are still in flux and could change. It is a new college and that means that details are still being worked out.

I am seeing on the CDSS site that they want people to explicitly mark CS if they are interested. The budget/enrollment limitations haven’t changed in anyway and in fact one of the reasons to carve out CS/DS into CDSS is to specifically given them the authority to admit by major - something that LS doesn’t like doing.

I am sure there may be ongoing tweaks but if I was an applicant I would trust what’s on the CDSS site right now - that they are admitting by major.

For the current, 2024 admit cycle, I agree that applicants to CS and other CDSS majors should currently assume they are being admitted by major, as these students were told when they applied. Regardless of how they are being admitted, at this point, students have already applied, their applications have already been evaluated, and very soon they will hear back.

I would in general agree if the current policy was more open vs. restrictive. When we have a restrictive policy advertised on the site, I wouldn’t assume a future change because people may take an unnecessarily optimistic view on their ability to declare. Having seen the back and forth on EECS 101 (the site where EECS staff post about enrollment) its inconceivable that these majors will be likely accessible to those selecting a different major on their application.

I agree it’s a good plan from the student’s perspective to assume that any changes will move in the direction of being more restrictive rather than less.

Would you agree, generally for people applying in the future that if they are dead set on a specific major at UCB, just apply directly to that major and not try to get into a “less competitive” major and trying to switch / straddle the class?

Yes I think that is a good plan at any UC. Apply to the major of interest.

I never knew that public health has become so much impacted. Keeping my fingers crossed, hopefully my kid gets in Cal.

Ah, that’s right, your son is a campus ambassador - you have the real inside scoop on things now!

That is also how I read that page.

Still going to be high-demand, just not for L&S

is it likely that the statistics major will continue having a higher acceptance rate compared to CS & data science if CDSS admits by major?

I don’t think anyone can predict future acceptance rates. It will depend on the number of slots available, the yield they expect, and the number of people applying. An individual applicant’s chance will also depend on the relative strength of the applicant pool for the major.
