Last year my daughter was rejected USC, accepted UCLA and waitlisted Berkeley…then got off the Berkeley waitlist and loving it there !
Why didnt she go to UCLA?
Because she got in to Cal!
For my school it is easier to get into Cal than UCLA.
we live 20 minutes from UCLA …she wanted to experience a different area and not have the risk of bumping into us!
i logged into the Berkeley campus solutions page with my MAP id and it shows I have an actual account created but other people who have checked don’t have it. ik decisions are tmrw but does anyone else see this
Yes.
There is another thread all about these portal changes

What time does Cal release results historically? I seem to remember that it was late afternoon 3 years ago.
Decisions were released around 3:30 pm PST last year.
Using the tool posted above, 16% got into Cal from my daughter’s h/s and only 8% to UCLA. My “perfect stat” kid (w/awesome ECs & leadership) was rejected from UCLA (in addition to a dozen others), so I’m really praying that UCB values my kid for her hard work. It’s been a really hard month.
based on the overall admit rate, UCLA has been more selective than UCB for the last couple of years, but I believe some majors at UCB are more selective. Their EECS major was certainly more selective.
UCB has a storied past in many areas of science, but I think they have not been attracting same level of talent in pure science faculties that they used to say 20 years ago.
Selectivity is not a measure of academic quality and research talent. Selectivity just means a lot of students are applying for few spaces in the entering class.
UCLA is a good school, but there are also a lot of non academic factors that attract students to UCLA (housing, food, reputation for less grindy vibe, etc.). On the other hand it seems to me that students are primarily attracted to UCB for its academic strength.
UCB is still ranked significantly higher for academics on most world rankings. The only serious ranking list (that I’m aware of) which puts UCLA equal to UCB is US News. Niche isn’t a super serious ranking system, but it favors UCLA, and that’s probably because Niche puts a lot of weight on non academic student rating factors (party scene, dorms, campus food, etc).
I didn’t say UCB had lower academic quality for undergraduate students than UCLA. I don’t know that, and I doubt that would be true in any objective way.
A lot of students were/are attracted to UCB due to its proximity to Silicon Valley and tech jobs.
UCB would do a lot better if they started giving 4 year housing guarantee.
Does UCLA even have a EECS major?
I think having the #1 ranked dorm food helps UCLA a lot. UCB is not even on the list. S24 will likely turn down UCB even if he gets in just because of the food…
what is CSE or CE major at UCLA? that should be like EECS at UCB, right. but i have not looked at their curriculum.
i live in Berkeley, and i can say that you do get good food here. i don’t know about dorm food. i can’t imagine any student liking dorm food in any university.
By doing better, do you mean having more students apply?
I don’t think there’s a competition where UCB needs to have more applications than UCLA in order to be better
I think housing and other amenities would make UCB more appealing to some students, but I also think a lot of students are turned off by Cal’s perceived grindy vibe, or are concerned about safety issues that are in the news a lot, or just prefer the LA area.
i think competition is nonsensical. i was saying that it would do a lot better by students and parents by providing 4 years housing guarantee.
In all honesty, I’m not sure.
S24 was not happy about having to apply to EECS at UCB because that sounds doubly hard.
I think any debate about UCB vs UCLA is moot because AFAIK, most people don’t get into both. Anyone who gets into one of the other will be thrilled about the wonderful opportunity offered at each campus.
Wow! There are a zillion perfectly good and not too expensive places to eat around UCB. Since the dorms are off campus by 1-3 blocks, students have restaurants and coffee shops just as convenient to the dorm as the dining halls are. So there’s lots of variety. I do hear that UCLA has good dining hall food, but Berkeley is totally a foodie town… Food is plentiful and diverse.
