UC Berkeley Class of 2029 Official Discussion Thread

Occasionally, if a student is unable to interview, it is possible. Happened with one girl at my school (in state). She ended up getting Gtech stamps too.

Leaning UCLA for everything. Then, I saw that Berkeley grads make almost 10k more on avg. for starting salary (usnews)

Such stats need context, though. Making 10k more but living in, say, the Bay Area vs LA, may make such a difference negligible.

This is a good point… But either way if you are the top of your class you will be making more than enough.

S25, finally committed to UCB, over USC, where S22 is a rising senior. Primarily, because of reduced NM scholarship from USC and options at Berkeley, CNR (offering a minor in Haas and SPUR), US News program ranking, more possibilities of internships and potential job offers than the Socal area.

My son’s major is EECS. He is looking for a roommate. Do we have a website for that?

Thanks!

My S23 had great results from the random roommate match in his freshman dorm; they got along so well that they now live off campus together.

Do they normally group students together by major? I think it might be better if they are in the same school of engineering.

At least in my son’s year, the random match process had a short questionnaire that mostly asked about practical things like how late do you prefer to stay up, how social do you want to be in the room, how messy or neat, etc. My son had two roommates, they all had different majors and were even in different colleges, although they did all have a lot in common (chemical engineering in college of chemistry, CS in its own college, materials science in college of engineering). It would not have been as enjoyable if they all had the same major, I think.

I mainly used instagram to find roommates. There is a College of Engineering group chat where many people are trying to find roommates.

Can you send me the link?

Thanks!

S25 just got off the waitlist at UCLA -instate for Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics. He had already committed to UCB. Now, another dilemma awaits him. Can’t complain. Spoiled for choices we are; and UCLA was his dream school alongwith USC (S22).
Any suggestions folks?

Take UCLA! Much better for Microbio. I am a bit biased tho… Go bruins!!

Which school will your son enjoy more? What environment does he like? If you’re familiar with both schools, then whatever is the best fit would be best. Both schools will be challenging but give him a great education for the presumably instate tuition. Good luck!

We visited both UCLA and UCB. My son chose EECS @ UCB (Regents’ scholar) over CSE @ UCLA even UCLA surrounding is better.

Thanks.. he has always wanted to go to UCLA and wants to stay close to home. Had committed to UCB, as it was the best offer at that time. We are just thinking whether his job prospects will be brighter with a degree from Berkeley.

Makes sense given the regent scholarship. S25 feels UCLA will be a better premed option.

Does anyone know when I can expect a housing offer after submitting a housing application for freshman year?

which is why averages and population statistics are only somewhat useful. I would argue that your individual circumstances, programs, use of available resources, and overall happiness at one over the other will do more determine your final outcome than the population statistics of Berkeley vs UCLA
