this is great info! thank you sm! i have asked reddit, but i didn’t get much back, so thought i’d try cc, but berkeley time is a great resource to know
This has been a very quiet thread, but I wanted to post this link with Middle Class Scholarship updates, in case other families (like mine) are waiting for more information.
Thank you for posting! Although we are not eligible for MCS, I am VERY happy to see the news that MCS awards will be retained at the same level as last year, as I know that the initial MCS awards this year were not sufficient to make UC affordable for some families. Hoping that this award level will continue to future years as well.
Apparently being a teacher and a billionaire are not mutually exclusive. Maybe there is something deeper in the article, but I did just some speed reading and this is all I got.
Ian Stoica was my son’s professor for his operating systems class and at one point he took a bunch of students including my son to review the original research paper that launched the idea of Databricks.
it’s not just Databricks - founders of many successful firms - Perplexity, Covariant and Open AI came from the research labs at Berkeley EECS. Many of the professors also have outside interests - for instance Pieter Abeel has a VC firm called AIX ventures.
I’d also add this is not just a Berkeley phenomenon. For instance I ran into a high flying AI start up called Snorkel AI that came out of a Stanford professors research lab. That company has raised hundreds of millions but the prof is still at Stanford
