I heard some one get off transfer waitlist but I am not sure about the accuracy
@chrispuppy L&S here
L&S here too
yesterday?? what college were they, how’d you hear about it?
Umm I’m not sure if this means anything but I just got an financial aid email giving me 8k for this month out of nowhere?? Usually at my community I just get like $500 a month so something is up. First time in a year this had happened. No other glitches or anything.
@harryjackson1 from berkeley? that’s great! probably means something tbh. r u taking classes at berk rn?
No. All my financial aid is distributed through bankmobile under a generic non-school associated code, so I can only speculate being left in the dark. However I am just wondering of the reasons cause I hear students recieve their financial aid early when they get accepted. I am not trying to flex or anything, because if this isn’t acceptance then something is wrong like maybe I got an unwanted loan and being bad with money that would be scary so I’m am simply unsure wth is going on. Currently I am taking 3 summer classes a at my CC but if I get in will drop 2 of them.
Wait did they actually disburse the 8k/month to you? And have you committed to any other school?
I honestly wouldn’t think much of it since I’d assume you have to accept a university’s offer to get aid from them? And also, I don’t think Berkeley will disburse aid unless you pay them tuition for fall.
Not sure, but would err on the side of caution. I really hope you get in though.
I am not sure about your first sentence but yes, that money was deposited in my account at 6am and I didn’t not commit to any school despite getting into UCSD and USC but chose to stay another year at cc if I did not get in.
Yeah I’ma discuss it with my family and after a day if there is no notice I will start calling people and checking my school financial papers. Ty.
@harryjackson1 oh, that’s pretty weird, and yeah that’s what my first sentence meant. And wow, you really love Cal. USC and UCSD are some pretty incredible schools. I’m assuming this didn’t happen before for your other acceptances?
I hope we get off this waitlist. It’s been such a long ride.
Did you tell FAFSA that you were staying another year? Maybe they don’t know and they’re assuming you are leaving to a 4 year. For sure check it out though, last thing you would want to do is spend all the money and then have to pay it back.
You can’t receive financial aid from a school you haven’t committed to. Berkeley would have to know without a doubt that you are attending the school before they release the funds. There are some people who do reject wait-list offers, it wouldn’t make sense to disperse funds before getting an SIR.
Hi, just make sure it is not a fraud attempt! I work in a financial institution and I have seen these things. They deposit money into accounts as benefits from schools then they ask people to reimburse via prepaid cards or sells or Venmo. Be careful!
Holy thank you guys. Outside of FAFSA and the School who else should I contact? I am a bit worried because I have never called FAFSA before and today/tmrow will be a holiday so I am unsure about opening hours. Either way I was very confused because I’m not sure if anyone is familiar with bankmobilevibe here but all I see are numbers saying they will be transferred in 1 business day to my bank. I have been at my CC for a total year and most I have received at once is upwards of 2k in a quarter, with the normal being roughly 500 a month from financial aid. 8k is just a huge sum out of nowhere(and most importantly, I have NO idea where its from)and made sure to never accept any loans or amounts of money that would have to be paid back.
I always assumed bankmobile was just tied directly to my school’s database so anything that pops up there is naturally linked to whatever fin aid gives me.
Berkeley doesn’t use bankmobile, they use direct deposit, also the financial aid for Berkeley will arrived in august 15th, after students register for classes in July 15th. I used to have financial aid with bankmobile for my CC, and indeed it is weird normally it says where the money is from when you enter to the bankmobile website. I would definitely reach out FAFSA.
Kind of off topic, but does anyone here think that UC’s will have in person classes this school year?
The way things are going I feel like stuff won’t be back to normal until Fall 2021. I’m really torn as to whether I should move out or not. I’m sick of my hometown and I just want to leave already. But on the other hand, paying ~1000 a month just to be confined in a dorm room sounds miserable.
What do you guys plan to do about housing for this upcoming school year?
@harryjackson1 I’m cog sci also, What prereqs did you finish? Do you have any guess why Cal didn’t accept you? Ik for me if you just look at my GPA it isn’t amazing but that’s because of classes I took during my freshman year of high school. I can’t figure out any other reason.
@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS”
Hello, I did manage to complete every preqreq outside of cogsci itself which I assume you can only take at Cal. For my weaknesses, I would definitely say essays. At the time I just didn’t have as much relevant ECs to talk about as I do now, so I ended up talking more about my past/present/interests which doesn’t hold as much weight as something recent imo.
I do want to specify that I did not complete prereq for UCLA(every other school I applied for I did) and my understanding is because Cal doesn’t have many classes required under Assist, it would be very strong to come out and show you fulfilled UCLA’s as well since it is still relevant.
Presently I am still trying to build some extracurricular that are outside the bounds of general studies such as tutoring and find more applicable things towards my majors in internships. Unfortunately, this has been quite hard to do, so I am also working on building my technical knowledge.
There were plenty of people in this thread with 4.0 GPA, internship experience, volunteering etc. It means nothing. You are just competing with either less or more number of students according to your ethnicity in the beginning, and then they decide how do you fit under their model of an ideal student with your gender, economic and social standing and your views. I had the highest gpa in my group and completed all the recommended classes. I’m a political asylee with volunteer and work experience, extracurricular activities, competitions participant, and has been supporting my little sister and grandmother myself since my parents passed away. I really want to leave politics aside, but I was the only student of Caucasian ethnicity in my group and the only one who didn’t get in (I’m talking about approximately 20 students who applied to UCB). What kills me the most, is that even people who were telling that they don’t like this major and for whom I was doing their part of semester-length group project - got accepted.
@mimininja yeah there are many incentives for their selection, with a huge factor being funding if they fulfill ethnicity ratios and state regulations.
Off topic but it is sort of sad seeing feedback from my school’s tutoring director and internship adviser assuring me that they would be shocked if I didn’t get off the waitlist with the whole Coronavirus thing. I don’t have the heart to explain that Berkeley just isn’t accepting that much people regardless and even then I am very unlikely to get in general.
I was told the exactly same thing by the chair of my department. He was like, “I’m sure they’ll take you off the waitlist, they always do it for our architecture students, and especially will do it now with coronavirus etc. And even if not, I’ll write you a letter, and they’ll take you after you submit it with your appeal.” And then UCB said that rejected waitlisters are not allowed to appeal…
I’m sure they won’t accept me off the waitlist, as I think that they will be prioritizing people of color considering current social mood. And that’s not a complaint or anything, just how I see it as a matter of fact. Yesterday I’ve registered and planned Philosophy course in my cc, and since I’m now staying there till spring to complete AS in Architecture, I’ll just get one more in Philosophy as well. Will then try to apply to UCB again for both majors to boost up my chances.
