Yeah being on the appeals list is brutal odds. I assume 99.5% of appeals list people got automatically rejected because there wasn’t space for it this year. The waitlist will have more than enough people to cover the melt alone.
I got the mid-July letter also. I have a hunch that all transfer waitlist people got that email, while all transfer appeal people got the rejection. I think it would be weird for Berkeley to send out rejections before sending out acceptance is, I think they would have to do it at the same time. Thus because many people got the mid-July letter, I think that everybody got the mid-July letter and whenever in July they release the decisions those will be the final decisions one way or the other.
@NickAppliedMath Wait, so you expect all of them to release on one day in July; not in waves?
@harryjackson1
Thanks so much for the kind words! I took 6 courses total and got above average but they didn’t see that or anything else from my application so yeah I’m done. Honestly thanks a lot though man means a lot :)) Best of luck!!
@ShmopyShoj
Yeah, I’m very glad I have UCSB! I did not have the Chem sequence but they still took the time to look through my application and saw potential in me. I’ll look into CCS thanks so much dude!
Keep in mind everyone, that though Berkeley ranks high in a lot of things, they have rejected some very intelligent people who would excel in classes that many UCB students find difficult. I’m not sure what goes on in admissions lol.
Once again good luck to everyone. This does not define you at all no matter what happens. We’ve all worked hard and will succeed wherever we go. Go transfers!
P.S. If others on this thread end up going to UCSB it would be great to vIbE together
Yeah, I do. I have no factual basis for saying that, but it’s just a hunch. My reasons are that if they release in waves, then they have to wait for the 7 day window they give people to accept it not before releasing another way. Doing this even a coupe of times would push the whole process well past “mid-July”.
So my theory is, they’re going to get as many people as they can on one big wave, and whoever doesn’t except within that seven day window they’re just gonna have an empty seat for.
Basically there’s going to be one last ditch effort by taking as many of the waitlist people as possible, then however many of them don’t follow through it’s just however many empty seats they have.
But most likely if you’ve hung onto your waitlist position this long, you’ll probably want to get in if they offer you a spot. I can’t imagine waiting this long and then declining a waitlist acceptance.
I agree. If they had data that there was a good chunk of space then they would have accepted some before the deadline on the 30th. Because they didn’t it seems that they are only keeping the waitlist extended due to being uncertain of how many more students will drop by the 15th. I do not expect them to release any decisions early this month at all, but assuming they will not extend the waitlist again they are probably going to release it when enough time has passed to make a calculated guess on how the amount of spots they need while also having enough time remaining to refill the main wave of the people that did not accept.
Well like it or not this has taken some of my resolve because I took the initiative to double down on appointments and extracurricular that starts in early July in preparation for another attempt to apply. Now again, I have 0 clue of how likely this extension will favor the people on the wailtist to be admitted, so now I have to hesitate between pursuing my original plans with the intent that I could cancel them after I have done interviews(disrespectful)or just delay them further which could be seen negatively regardless.
@harryjackson1 @NickAppliedMath
Well, there’s also the fact that they could do 2 waves, even if one wave is on July 10 (with second wave being on July 17th, still mid-july), so they could have realized they have some additional time regardless of what they choose.
Do y’all think there’s still a shot? I know @harryjackson1 was a little negative about earlier, but you seem to be just a little bit more positive about it now lol.
Edit: they don’t absolutely have to give 7 days for students to contemplate the offer - this is later than ever, so that window can be made to 3-5 days like many other schools.
I am thinking a bit more positively about it than I was before. Before I thought that only like 10-20 more students would be admitted and basically 99.5% of the remaining wait-list would be rejected.
Now based on nothing concrete - just me being in a better mood lol- I am thinking they might accept more people, in the 100-200 range. That means chances are only about 5%. So it isn’t decent odds but at least it’s not basically 0%.
I think one or two people on this thread will get in.
I don’t even want to think about the odds being something high like 25% or something. That would be way too naive and I’d only be setting myself up for heartbreak imo.
I say go ahead with your interviews. If you manage to get into UCB then you could always cancel whatever plans you had. If you don’t get in then you will be very glad you didn’t cancel/postpone the interview.
Last summer I got a research offer from a relatively unknown school and I accepted it. A week later I got one from a T 3 school and I decided to go back on my original offer because it was a no brainer decision. I talked to the group who gave me the original offer and straight up told them that I am sorry but I could not pass up on the opportunity. They were understanding of the situation and wished me luck. They also thanked me for telling them as soon as I made up my mind because it gave them plenty of time to find a replacement.
If you have to cancel your plans later just be straight up with them on why you canceled and let them know ASAP. I’m sure they would have no trouble finding someone else who would take the opportunity.
Hi guys! Just wanted to let you guys know. My sister got into UC Berkeley a while back (as a transfer in April). She then decided that it was best to decline their admissions because she knew how much it meant for other students on the waitlist. Me and her are currently at UCLA who applied this year. I wish you all luck.
@20ucla20 really appreciate what you did for others
@beans456 how do you know the appeals committee didn’t read your appeal? Did they tell you that?
Although I didn’t expect to, I did get into UCLA. I am blown away that I received my housing offer today, from the school that starts later than Berkeley, a school that had more applicants than Berkeley, and a school who Has already put a very sizable dent in their waitlist compared to Berkley. What the heck is going on in Berkeley admissions right now?
Any updates from their live chat? I remember early morning both of them said that they can not confirm if decisions will be based on waves or released all at once. Only that everything will be finalized by July15 and this difficult time has made it unique so they simply don’t know.
They also said they can not take a final transcript due to making the waitlist fair for everyone.
Not directly part of the discussion but my neighbors literally tried to invite my family over for their annual July4 celebration with no masks or anything. Considering how some states are over 10k cases a day, July 4 may skyrocket the numbers again.
Good neighbors. I wouldn’t take that date seriously. First, they said the final decision will be released at the end of June. Then we were told to wait until mid-July. Now they say everything will be finalized in mid-July. A reasonable estimate is that we get final decisions at the end of August when fall semester begins.
and many ppl went to parade without masks, I saw the # of cases boosted about 40000 one day in last week from news
The gov should ask the public to have temperature checking facilities as what Asian countries do. Some ppl dont know they have already been sick and still hang out…
Someone from the freshmen waitlist forum got off a couple hours ago at 3pm PST. They were instate and for College of Engineering and has until JUL 8 to SIR. It seems the waitlist is trickling or just very few spots. Either way glad to see people getting admitted.

Wow, what are the chances. Engineering school is known to be highly selective. Speaking of colleges, how many of you are L&S here?
