So I am considering applying to UC Berkeley, I live somewhat nearby (60 miles) and would be a commuter. However, I receive some mixed/negative reactions about my wanting to go to UC Berkeley. It’s mainy economic reasons (low tuition, no housing, etc.), although I love the diversity of courses.
However, I have a hodge-podge of political and social opinions, and I am rather outspoken. I have been shut down for my opinions before and do not appreciate the experience.
- How was your impression of UC Berkeley?
- I understand the political climate is liberal. How are other opinions treated?
- How bad is the area around it?
First-hand accounts would be great!

firstly impression wise…why so many bums?! haha

what do you mean area around it? nearby cities? like richmond, el cerrito, oakland?

i think it would be better to live on campus or nearby and bart/bike/bus/walk since parking can be hard to find…But I did have a friend who drove to school and back but he lived in richmond. And I had another friend who took bart from Walnut creek to Berk.

Other than that from what my friends tell me the schools hard, everyones crazy (as in way too smart and study like nonstop), 20 units is like part time student…LOL.

If Cal is the school you want to go to then someone elses opinion about the school doesnt really matter, because college is what you make of it, it is your college experience.
