UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

Also accepted and stoked!!

Stats:
Poli Sci major
GPA: 3.801
major GPA: 3.88
IGETC: Completed by Spring
CCC student who attended 4 year OOS out of high school before returning home to the community college system.
EC’s: LOTS, used up all the space and talked as much as I could about my work experience etc.
Applied: UCSC, UCD, UCSB, UCI, UCSD, UCLA, UCB
Accepted: UCSC, UCD, UCSB, UCI, UCLA, UCB
Waitlisted: UCSD (did not accept)
Denied: None (yay!)

Met with admissions counselor to go over credits, she was nice and gave me good indication of what to expect come decision time.

also had the SIR in my calcentral from the start, STUDENT-TYPE-NOTREGISTERED, new admit tours, 2-4-2 email thing (although I do not think any of these are truly indicative except the SIR payment option in my calcentral)

GO BEARS!

@jjonah15 The Calnet wasn’t working for me either but once I accepted my admission, I got a notification saying that I might need to wait 24 hours to access the Calnet ID creation. So I think it will work tomorrow.

There is receptions happening for newly admitted transfers if you go on Cal Central in your notifications click on “Admissions, Events, Apr 27 and it shows events happening May 5

I’m curious, did any one year transfers get accepted?

@aymc1104 Thank you so much for all of that information, I really appreciate it.

Accepted!! Found out while eating enchiladas and then had to leave the restaurant because I was sobbing. Total surprise for many reasons and I know next to nothing about UCB since I applied on a whim. So hopefully this will provide some encouragement for the underdogs.

OOS community college
Major: L&S CS
GPA: 3.62 (But had multiple withdrawals, which I don’t think I explained in the application)
** side note: HS GPA was 2.93 so I guess I really glowed up there
EC: Did a lot more in HS but in college I worked on the school newspaper and had an investigative journalism internship at a non profit. Also worked at my family restaurant.
Essay: People told me they were pretty good but I’m honestly not so sure. Talked about my interest in computational journalism and how my internship/personal projects reflected that interest.
Applied: UCSD, UCLA, UCB, UW (WA)
Accepted: UCSD
Rejected: UCLA

I’ll be graduating with an AA-T in spring/summer!

I’m honestly very worried about the conditions of my acceptance. It didn’t even cross my mind when I was registering for classes because I didn’t think there was any chance of me getting in. I ended up not taking most of the classes I said I would, plus some personal (but documented) issues got in the way of everything. The acceptance will probably be rescinded but at least I feel like I accomplished something. (If anyone knows more about this issue, give me a holler!)

Great job, everyone!

@SmartJarhead You’re a global studies major, right? I was admitted for the same major

I was at work all day and didn’t have time to post but for future applicants:

ADMITTED!!!

School: Diablo Valley College
GPA: 4.0
Major: Media Studies/Communications
Prereqs: Done but Spring 2018
IGETC: Done by Spring 2018
Graduating with an AA-T in Comm Studies this semester
EC: Not many because I work full time but I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, volunteer as a speaker and coordinator for Active Minds, and freelance interior design and fashion styling
Applied: UCSD, UCLA, UCB, SDSU, Sacramento State, and San Jose State
Accepted: UCSD, UCLA, UCB
Rejected: SDSU

I am so beyond excited… I was so nervous all day long and when I checked the portal I legit cried my eyes out. I have no clue where I want to go but I know that I’ll make the best decision for myself. For anyone who is looking to apply, just know that anything is possible if you work at it and stay motivated. Don’t stress too much on EC because, in my opinion, grades, personal statement, and completion of prereqs matters most. Of course, if you aren’t working full time then maybe focus a bit more on doing extracurriculars, but if you are, then just make sure you keep your grades all the way up.

Congrats everyone!!

@QueenA101

Thanks for posting your stats and congratss!!! I was wait listed and i’m committing to UCLA but i was still curious to know what other poli sci majors were like.

I’m reposting my stats and hopefully helpful advice from the UCLA thread so that maybe it helps the possible 2019 transfer students reading-

CC student from LAVC
Accepted: UCLA, UC Irvine, UCSB, Cal poly pomona, csulb, csula, csun
Waitlisted: UCB
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.91 with 3 W’s, two of which were major classes that i retook
Major pre-reqs: Completed 4/4 with A’s
IGETC: Done, also completed my AA-T as a back-up
TAP: No, though available at my school i believe
Units: Finished 81 units; will have 84 units by end of Spring
ECs/ volunteer work: Nothing from the last three years, just included my high school stuff from 2015 and before which was impressive-ish for a hs student
Awards: Just making the Dean’s honor list/ President’s honor list and two of my most noteworthy awards from hs
Personal insight questions: Admittedly, not the greatest but i wrote from the heart. What i suspect had major impact was writing about my mental health the last few years and how it’s helped strengthen my resolve.

Advice: Even if you think you’re not up to par based on your GPA or lack of recent EC and volunteer work, which was my greatest concern, apply anyway. Their selection process is truly holistic. Don’t hold back on your personal insights. I truly believe that is what made the difference in my case. Because i know countless other transfer students apply with perfect GPA’s and tons of impressive ECs/awards/etc but i was able to really show them how much i wanted to be at UCLA. Acknowledging the stigma attached to mental health issues, i truly embraced it- i put it all on the table. I tied it all into my philosophy of making the best out of all experiences and finding the educational value in everything. Anyway, i hope someone finds this helpful in some way.

Best of luck to all in all your future endeavors.

wow your story is awesome and encouraging.!!
Can I ask how many withdrawals you got?

Guys question: I decided not to take a course that wasn’t required for my major and is purely unreleated to my prerequisites/IGETC, I emailed my admissions counselor to ask about it but am just paranoid that it’ll be an issue…any advice? The class was “intro to pop culture” and my major is poli Sci — i cant imagine this would affect admissions since other than that I got an A in every other class
