Philosophy majors deciding between Berkeley and other schools (@yoojustgotin ?) - please get in contact with me! I’m a senior philosophy major at Berkeley and I’ve loved it here. I’m pretty familiar with what other philosophy departments in the UC system are like, too.
I posted this about 150 pages ago, so I thought I’d post again.
@transfer201831 hey, I got in for this fall. Congratulations on getting accepted
Forgot to mention I had 4 addresses listed and I got waitlisted.
@ashxio congrats on your acceptance! Where in so cal are you? I made a FB page called Cal Spring 2019 Transfer Admits.

I was admitted to Haas. For future applicants, hop over to the 2018 Haas thread and there’s a lot more information on our process - including the supplemental and interview, and I’ll provide a more in-depth update there. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions too.
Note to future transfer students if you guys make it this far down the thread when you’re applying in 2019 or whenever you read this:
GPA: 3.93 - had D’s and even an F in the past and lots of W’s, but had the D’s and F removed from my GPA. I returned to another CC after a few years and had all A’s over 2 years and 70+ units.
EC’s: Not nearly as “impressive” as others may have, but I took a lot of significance in the things that I did do, and they are all things I was passionate about. “Finding” EC’s to do for the sake of the app is a really silly thing to do. I was not a president of anything or a member of some club, but everything I did was meaningful to me, and I was able to show that.
Personal Essays: I never understood how people would rate their own essays like a 9/10, but all I can say is I poured myself into them. I had 20+ drafts for each essay, including the supplemental, and maxed out every single one. I didn’t have a single person edit them, but if you aren’t a strong writer I recommend you do.
College Confidential: a great source for information half of the time. The other half is mostly speculation and information that will just worry you. It’s really not worth it. I was admitted and never got the “alumni email” everyone freaked out about, never saw multiple addresses, and didn’t bother with trying to make a calnet ID. Even now my student type still says “not registered”, so all the stuff beforehand really means nothing.
Also, I’m really not a fan of the “chance-me” thing and didn’t provide my stats to anyone prior to this because I don’t think it helps anyone. Focus on your work, be confident in your application, and know that regardless of whether or not you stack up to someone else in a favorable way, you still have a chance. I know this because all the chance-me’s I saw prior only added anxiety for me and nearly had me NOT apply to Haas.
UCLA/UCB Conspiracy: I was admitted to both UCLA BizEcon and UC Berkeley Haas, as were a number of my fellow Haas applicants. The UCLA / UC Berkeley correspondence is not legitimate. Focusing on what getting into UCLA means or doesn’t mean for getting into Berkeley is a harmful waste of your time. The only thing that will raise or lower your chances is the work you put into preparing for your application.
Good luck and best wishes to everyone.
@justtransfer417 any changes to any courses you planned to take in the Spring/Winter 2018 should be reported to UCB
Would it be a mistake to decline Cal and UCLA acceptance? I was accepted to both of their L&S departments and now I’m getting cold feet. I think I applied just to boost my confidence and show my family that I’m capable. Now that I got in my parents want me to accept either one but I kinda want to go to a state school to be a pe teacher.
Is cal transfer day May 5th???
@inspiredbysleep yeah
@GoldenState1 dope! See you all there
