UC Berkley

I am a junior undergrad ( microbiology major) at a tier 3 school and I would like honest opinions on whether top tier grad programs are a reasonable goal. After this semester I will officially be a senior. I have a 3.6 gpa with 1.5 years research experience. No publications, only presentations at national research conventions. I’m in the honors program and have not taken the gre yet so I can’t account for it at the moment. I want to apply to the microbiology program at UC Berkley, but I have no idea what they are looking for in a prospective student, would I be wasting my time in applying? Should I stick to lower tier grad programs? Any help is greatly appreciated. I would love to hear from students who maybe went from low tier to top tier. I hear it doesn’t happen often, so that’s why I decided to post.

You must be a junior to apply, and they will want at least a 3.8 GPA.
