UC Chances? Thanks (:

I’m only a sophomore in highschool but I want to see what I need to do in order to get into a UC.
I took the SAT already and got a 2160. I’m going to take a bootcamp over this summer and I was told by my advisor that after this SAT boot camp, I’ll be sure to get close to a perfect score. She said “A 2350 will be highly do-able with little effort. I’m sure that if you put in the time, you’ll get a perfect score on your SAT.”
SAT Critical reading: 710
SAT Math: 700
SAT Writing: 720
I took the ACT as well and got a composite of 33.
I’ve only completed one semester of my sophomore year and I got a 3.6 weighted. Yes, I know it’s really bad. But I’m 100% positive I’m going to do way better.
This semester my grades are practically finalized and I’m pretty sure my GPA will be a 3.83 weighted.
I hope to do better next years and I know I will.
I’m taking 1 honors course this year, but next year I’m taking 3 AP’s. Senior year I’ll be taking 5 AP’s.
Hopefully those will pull up my GPA.
I’ve determined through calculations and guesstimations, that my overall average HS GPA will be around 3.8 weighted which I know is REALLY bad but I go to Monta Vista High School which is one of the most rigorous high schools. My advisor told be that colleges look at Monta Vista and take that into HUGE consideration since a B at Monta Vista is an A at a mediocre school.
I don’t have many extracurriculars other than I play tennis, I’ve been on the water polo team at my school for two years, I volunteer every summer and have more than 500 hours worth of volunteering. I’m also affiliated with many companies due to a YouTube account I have with over thousands of viewers and subscribers. I’m also affiliated with the company Xilinx which is all about computer engineering and I’m an intern there. I run a leadership program for teens, by teens. I actually think that will help me a lot, since the group I’m working with there is tightly affiliated with some UC’s, and I was told by the head of the group that she would definitely make sure she personally talks to the people at the UC’s.
I understand this is a lot of “fluff”, but I just want to see where I stand.
Please let me know (: I know my SAT score is pretty good but I also know my GPA is way too low. Tell me the honest truth! (: Thank youu!
And this is for ANY UC. I specifically want to go to UCSB but I want to know my chances for all UC’s.
Thanks (:

I love how you think a 3.8 is “REALLY BAD!” I would LOVE to have a 3.8. A 33 ACT is excellent. If this camp can help you get great SAT scores then by all means, go for it. Your ECs are not horrible, and I believe that UCs are more stat-based but that could be wrong. Either way, I’d say you’ll be in at UCSB.

I guess the school I go to makes me think a 3.8 is ridiculously bad! I swear it was. Is it really not that bad?

Oh my gosh! That’s fantastic! I would say you have a great chance anywhere!!! Keep it up, and best of luck! Chance back???

Umm, no, that is not bad.

I’d say you’ll almost definitely be in at all UCs up until UCSD. (And i think you have a great chance at UCSD) UCLA and UCB are kind of a reach because your gpa is definitely lower than their average applicant’s. However, just thought i’d point out a couple of things…

 1. Either your SAT score is 2130, or you typed out the wrong breakdown.
 2. This SAT book camp business is so off…just because you got a 21xx your sophomore year does not mean that you will get a 2350+ after you take this ‘boot camp.’
3. On the GPA issue, the UCs only calculate your GPA based on your sophomore and junior year, (they look at your senior year grades but its not calculated, keep in mind your application is due by the end of november). Also, your advisor is straight whack, or you’re exaggerating the claims he/she made. Just because monta vista is on the top 100 high schools in America list, DOESNT mean your grades are worth significantly more than other school’s grades. You say your advisor claims a B at MV is worth an A from other schools but that’s straight nonsense. Ask yourself this, would a college really take a 3.0 gpa student from monta vista over a 4.0 student from another school? (assuming all other parts of the application are identical). Hint, the answer is no, in almost every instance

but i digress, if UCSB is the school you want to go to, just make sure your junior year grades are solid and i think you’ll be in

Definitely raise your GPA if you want to get into harder UCs like UCLA and UCB. There are applicants with significantly higher GPAs in those colleges.

I also advise you to be cautious about the whole boot camp “we’ll raise you to a 2350+” claim. I’m not saying you can’t do it because you certainly do have the potential to raise your score up by a lot, but don’t rely on those words. In the end it all comes down to how hard you work for your score. But try not to obsess over the SAT too much. Once you reach ~2250 you’re set, and once you hit 2300, you shouldn’t worry about getting it any higher.

Your community service (wow, 500+ hours!) and whole YouTube organization seems impressive and uncommon to me. :)

Just keep on improving your academics and I think you’re set for UCSB. Definitely a reach, however, for UCLA and UCB.
