UC/CS Housing Costs - URM and low income

Is it possible for talented URM and low income students to receive
financial aid to cover housing costs in addition to tuition and fees?

Is this for a Calif school and the student is instate?

I have seen FA pkgs from UCs (not CSUs) that give about $20k in grants. That covers tuition and some of housing. To get more, a student would likely need to get a merit award from the school. Full student loans (stafford and perkins) tend to cover much of the rest of R&B…and WS seems to provide for misc expenses.

The thinking seems to be that much of a student’s living expenses should be on the student via loans, WS, and maybe a summer job.

@mom2collegekids This would be for an in-state student applying to a UC or Cal State. Thank you!

Cal Grants are generally intended to cover tuition & fees only, although the Cal Grant B also provides a book stipend for very low income students. The rest would have to be covered with Pell grant, work study, and federal loans, which should generally be enough to cover room/board, especially if the student qualifies for the higher Cal Grant B award and doesn’t have to worry about also coming up with money for books.
