How hard is to switch majors at any UC’s ?
Example from Econ to Bio . Thank you

Each UC campus will have a different policy on changing majors especially if they are in different colleges. You can Google change of major to Biology for any UC. Some campuses may be harder than others.

Here is UC Davis’s change of major policy for Biological Sciences:

Change of Major Accompanied by Change of College

A change of major petition, available on the OASIS portal at https://students.ucdavis.edu/, must be approved by a faculty or staff advisor of the new major you are selecting. In addition, admission to the new college will require that dean’s approval. To obtain that approval, you must be in good academic standing (qualitatively and quantitatively), meet all minimum GPA criteria, including those for the major, and satisfy any other admission requirements established by the new college.

All students planning to change their major to a CBS major must consult with a Biology Academic Success Center (BASC) advisor before filing a change of major petition.

It is not possible to change or declare a major in the quarter in which you file to graduate.

UCSD is the absolute worst for switching into Bio. Berkeley, UCLA and UCSB are bad but not impossible. The rest arent bad. REmember to switch you often have to have completed certain Bio core classes and priority registration for those classes is given to current Bio students and can be hard to register for. If you definitely want to go the route of switching consider completing some of these at community college this summer.

At Davis, it is more difficult to move from L&S into College of Bio Sci than it is to move in the opposite direction.

Lower division courses at UC Davis are not restricted to certain majors. That means that any student in any major, can enroll in bio, chem, o-chem, physics, calculus, etc. That said, freshmen have the latest registration. Because those classes are in high demand, there often isn’t space for everyone.

Will it be this Friday March 8th??

Possibly based on the previous year’s decision dates. UCD has not confirmed a decision date.

Is there still a possibilty to change majors at this point in time? I don’t see the option in the portal and I also don’t see my second choice major. Does that mean Davis will emphasize the first choice more?

No way to change majors now and they will occasionally consider an alternate but is not a guarantee.

Unless things have significantly changed, after the first 1-2 quarters, there will be a number of people quitting bio and move somewhere else. Because of the curve, a significant percentage (used to be over 50%, but that figure is probably much different now) will end up with C/D/F and those people will quit the major.

Also lower division bio classes are usually offered every term. It doesn’t matter if you are off track for the first 1-2 years. In fact, I learned taking core classes off track is actually a lot easier because of the curve.

Exception would be Business at UCB, CS and Engineering where it is impossible to change into because of GPA requirements, most other majors are not that hard. Many cases, getting someone to sign off involves having them look thru your transcript to make sure you are not wasting your own time.

we are all nerves over here…

I keep telling my son to stay busy, but I’m doing a terrible job of following my own advice.

I think I would rather he be rejected than be put on waitlists. Another months long round of waiting and wondering if you’ll get a “better” opportunity is too much. And creates a sense of having to settle for one of your admits in the most likely scenario of not coming off the waitlist.

Per the common data set, I think I remember reading that the UCD waitlist actually has a lot of movement (unlike some other schools). But like we already have been doing, it would mean more waiting. If we get on waitlist (we are oos so probably quite likely), my daughter will accept elsewhere, get on the waitlist, and just see what happens.

Yeah, we’ll accept and wait it out, too. I guess I’m just dreading not having closure by the end of March on this subject.

The common dataset has not been updated since 2020 but I have waitlist data posted on this discussion thread. Admits from the waitlist vary from year to year and in 2021, no waitlist admits were posted so you cannot count on being admitted.
