I know UC Davis has a Cinema and Technocultural Studies department, with a filmmaking program included. Reading the description online, it seems like they have a few different areas of study making up the film studies program. It also seems like the program bounces between theory and history, and actual film production (they do mention the facilities and equipment they offer, so I’m assuming there must be some production classes).

I’m not looking to attend UC Davis as a full time student. If anything, I would consider taking some classes from their film studies program as a part of the UCD open campus enrollment program (meaning I would only pay for and take one or two classes at UCD). I’ve been looking around online, and the website states “Most UC Davis courses are open to you through the Open Campus program, so you have hundreds of courses to choose from each quarter”. I’m guessing the film program is a part of that.

I do not want to attend UCD as a full time student. However, I’m interested in maybe being able to learn and practice filmmaking with other students without the price tag and time commitment of being a full time student. What I’m looking for is a very hands on class where you * actually film projects with other students *. I’ve heard a little about the TCS 175 small scale film production class, but I don’t know if that’s the only class that offers actual hands on production.

Basically, I wanted to ask any current or former UCD students enrolled in the film program if they think it’s worth it. ** I do not want to enroll in a class that spends a large majority of its time covering film theory and analyzing historical films **. I’m looking for a hands on production class where you actually have the chance to make short films. I know many film schools have a bad rap for only offering third and fourth year students the opportunity to actually use equipment to shoot films, while the first and second year students are limited to theory. I’m not going to be an actual four year student in a film major however, so I don’t know how much of this applies to my situation.

Thanks for any personal experiences! I’m really just trying to decide if enrolling in one or two UCD film program classes is worth it for me, considering that what I’m looking for is pretty specific.
