UC Davis VS Illinois Wesleyan University

Guys I am struggling between these two choices and cannot make up my mind which one to attend. I want to major in business and dreaming for consulting career. I know these two school are pretty different, that’s why I think the decision is hard.

Davis is a reputable public research university in west coast whereas Illinois Wesleyan University is a small liberal arts college in mideast two hours away from Chicago. I am accepted to the department of agricultural and environment faculty in Davis. Since IWU is a liberal arts school, I think it is very flexible to change/double majors there.

I love international issues and political science, and therefore want to major in business/management and minor in public policy/international relations. I think this is doable in both schools.

Davis attracts me for its larger campus and its environmental-friendly college town atmosphere. I think it would be much more fun to study in a large school and cheer for its sports games, the feeling of a larger community.

IWU is one of a few lac offers accountancy and risk management degree and I receive pretty decent scholarship from it. Cost is a great concern of mine since I am an international student, the cost for UC schools are very high for a non-california resident.

Many people told me that IWU is quite reputable in mideast and it would be easier to find a consultancy job in Chicago with an accountancy degree compared to that in California. (I am actually not sure about this, is job market very competitive in California, especially for consulting?)

The last point is that CA has much better climate compared to Illinois, I heard Chicago is very cold during winter time.

So how should I make my choice? Hope you guys can give me some good suggestions! Thanks!

How are you planning on paying for Davis? It sounds like it’s going to be unaffordable…in which case the decision is clear.

Yes, Chicago is very cold in the winter.

Good question! If going to Davis I need to try to graduate as early as possible, I think my parents are only able to support me for about three years

So is Davis still worth going? I think it has great atmosphere from all the presentation I have attended conducted by the admission officers!

Can you give us the exact prices for each and what your parents’ budget is?
It’s highly unlikely you’ll graduate from UC Davis in 3 years. Only half students manage to graduate in 4 years, most need 5… The university suffered budget cuts (which is why internationals are important: they bring a lot of money to the university). Sometimes students can’t take the classes they need for their major and must wait one more semester to take the class, thus delaying graduation prospects.
Will you have enough credits to enter with advanced credit at UC Davis? Is anything guaranteed to you?
If not, then Illinois Wesleyan is the best choice. It does have a great reputation in the midwest. Look at their career services and contact them: which companies recruit there? Are students helped in finding internships? What percentage students in your major get internships? How easily do internationals get CPTs and are they helped in that endeavor? <Are there “study away” programs in other regions or cities of the US and in what fields?

@MYOS1634‌ hello! Thanks for your information I think that’s very helpful! Well I have 16 credits because of my alevel results, will that be helpful for me to graduate earlier? I want to study business management btw, are there any problems registering courses for that major?

Yes, A Levels may give you advanced standing. Remember though that only 1/3 classes will be in your major, the others will be 1/3 general education (your ALevels will help there) and 1/3 optional. In addition, business management is often seen as a “soft” subject (not very demanding - those majors require the least writing, the least reading, etc) so to give it weight you’d need to study math or a traditional subject such as philosophy or history or economics.

@MYOS1634‌ oh I c! If business is is a soft subject, then must I go to graduate school to pursue a MBA to help for my consulting career? It seems like soft subjects, like business, require less efforts during undergraduate studies and therefore will not give me a good foundation

You can’t study for your MBA unless you’ve worked for at least 2-3 years, it’s a professional requirement (only non accredited programs will let you go straight from college… and you don’t want to waste your time in non accredited MBA programs!) For a consulting career, you need internships in consulting but any major will do - I recommend economics, math, applied math, computer science in particular. Business can be a minor in that case. If business is your major, I strongly recommend you take “traditional” subjects known to be rigorous.

@MYOS1634‌ ok I c! If in that case I would choose iwu as I am not very good in math therefore I will definitely need more personal attention! Thank u very much!

If you’re not very good at math, philosophy is considered very rigorous too. Check out IWU’s to see if you could combine philosophy and business.
Overall, based on your criteria, I’d say IWU is the best pick. But do email them with the questions I suggested plus any others you may have.

@MYOS1634‌ haha ok! Thank u overall! I think ur advice r very helpful!!! The other problem is, I am wait listed by franklin&marshall and Pepperdine! Bucknell is another school I haven’t received my decision letter! I did apply financial aid for franklin&marshall and Pepperdine, but none for Bucknell! And I don’t think I can afford franklin&marshall as well as Pepperdine if they offer me a place out of all the wait listed applicants without any scholarship, so does. So should I just go with iwu? I do like philosophy a lot! I think I will minor in public policy or philosophy with a major in accountancy or risk management!

*so does Bucknell

Pepperdine: are you a devout conservative Christian? Because if not you would likely find the mandatory weekly chapel and bible study problematic. If you’re on the waitlist and need FA, I wouldn’t expect much. You are allowed to deposit at one school while confirming your spot on the waitlist. If a better offer is made from the WL schools after May 1, you can take on the offer and lose your deposit. You MUST deposit somewhere by May 1 or you lose your place.

@MYOS1634‌ Though I am not a Christain, I have been in Christain schools for four years and I love my Christain teachers and friends! Therefore I actually prefer a Christain atmosphere on campus! Anyway, I think u r right that off waitlist students will hardly receive fa unless one is very competitive!

Ill. Wesleyan alum here. The school does an outstanding job of serving the needs of its students. Majors are flexable. If they don’t officially offer what you want, you can create your own.

I found the size ( approximately 2000 students) to be perfect. Always able to get into the classes I needed, which were taught by the professor. No teaching assistants, even in the science lab sections. Illinois State University, with over 20,000 students, is located just a few miles north.

Central Illinois winters are cold, wet, and windy. But the mild Autumns last into November and the green up of Spring starts in March.

Illinois Wesleyan is located in Bloomington IL, which is midway between Chicago and Saint Louis and served by Amtrak trains. And Bloomington is where insurance giants State Farm and Country Financial have their headquarters. Both have large intern programs.

UC Davis :)

@LeftWinger‌ Thanks so much!!! I have almost decided to enroll IWU and ready to submit the deposit! !!The only thing that concerns me now is whether I can transfer college credits using my alevel results as I cannot find any information regarding to alevel credits transfer on college website:(

@Rebecca0123‌ Haha thanks for your reply!! I believe u r part of the Davis community? My father actually prefers Davis but personally I am leaning towards IWU now according to all information I have here!

What are your 3 ALevels? Depending on what they are, as long as you got A-C results, it should be fairly easy to predict. Don’t forget to send a request for evaluation along with official results after you’ve accepted your offer.
