We are based in LA. Daughter accepted to UC Davis for neurobiology and neurophysioology for FALL 2025 for 39k.
She is accepted to Biology at UC Riverside for 36k.
She is aiming to go pre-med route.
Would love to hear about thoughts and experiences. Thank you.
UCR has a program where premeds can directly apply to their med school; worth a consideration. One of my friend’s daughter chose UCR due to proximity and ability to shine rather than UCD/SD. She is first year med in NYC this fall.

Overall, I have heard more people love Davis than Riverside. There are some I know that hated the remoteness of Davis. Others loved the small town feel. I don’t know anyone who actually loved the city of Riverside, though, the school looks nice.

Our daughter loved Davis!
She had a phenomenal health occupations advising team.
There are a lot of farm communities there where medically indigent patients go to local clinics served by the students at Davis and the Davis hospital in Sacramento (30 minutes from campus). They get wonderful experiences.
The thing about Davis that is phenomenal is that they have a collaborative way of studying. The professors and staff want the students to do well. Everyone works together to get good grades. There is wonderful support and free tutoring in each of the dorm buildings.
I don’t understand the comment about it being small. The town of Davis is a small community. The university at Davis is large. They’re 40,000 bikes on campus. Everyone bikes into class especially the professors and staff. Is an environmentally green campus. A number of buildings have been donated by the Napa wineries to the benefit of the students and staff. The dairy is on campus next to the Tercero dorm. Basically the campus has a “good sense of humor”.
When you visit during regular classes you’ll see that the students look happy. They don’t look stressed. They all have each other to get to good grades.
All of the shops and franchises have more parking for bikes than they do for cars. The train goes directly into town and comes from points west and points east.
Our daughter majored in NPB. She had an internship in Spain. She was very proactive in the health occupations advising center. She got into UCSF for medical school and other medical schools.
I am unfamiliar with the UCR program because I don’t know of any students that went there. I’ve been told that it’s good but that the students don’t like the area of the campus.

Thanks so she went from ucr pre-med to nyc med school? That is impressive.
The kid was very motivated. Went to UCR during Covid over other UCs. She was interested in the med school track at UCR.

Thank you and congratulations to your daughter getting into ucsf.
UCR medical school prefers those who want to practice in inland southern California, which means that origin from and/or ties to that region are likely important in consideration for that program.

Not sure about pre-med, S24 has wonderful time in UCD majoring in Aerospace engineering. He joined cycling team and Formula-SAE. He picked UCD over uDub, Ohio State, TAMU, Oregon State, UCR, UCSD, CPP and etc., We also toured UCR. We felt UCR is kind of small, kind of like his high school with over 3000 students. Good Luck.

I should mention Davis is a huge school with a massive campus. When my son and I and later daughter and I toured, it took us about an hour and a half to walk about a third of the campus. It’s massive and a bike seems almost necessary. Riverside, I hear, seems pretty small and takes about 15 minutes to get from one end to another. Not sure if that’s correct but I’ve heard parents of students say this.

Did she commit to one of the schools? Today is the deadline.
