I got into SB a while ago. I predict I will get into UCSD and maybe Econ at UCB, not sure about BizEcon at UCLA though. I have a 3.95 GPA but I’m completing the English and Calculus sequences just now. Could be a problem, right? Also, at the time I applied, I had only 16 credits completed in-state, rest was in PA, so I don’t know if they’ll consider me in-state.

Good luck maxx, and thanks for posting- I think the consideration of in state vs out of state has to do with residency rather than where your units were completed. Hope that helps.

“Daniel, I love thinking and discussing topics such as the ones you have brought up, but I always end up questioning what the goal is and where the questions stop.”

Actually you’d b surprised how practical philosophical questions (wow dosn’t that sound like an oxymoron) are. For example Louis Pasure (sp?) was continually told that life generated spontaneously because people “saw” life (mold) growing from a pot of nutrients after being boiled. If we (he) hadn’t challenged these observations, where would we be today. O.K. I’ll stop. No more. Philosophy hurts the brain.

Cogito ergo sum! -Descartes
I think therefore I am.

Good to see future philosophers/spiritual counselors keeping up with their Latin! I applied to the legal studies major at Berkeley. Half my classes will be from the upper-division phil department, but I also get to throw a little poli sci and econ in there too. If we get in hopefully I’ll see you there.

Thanks for the offer. I live 5 mins driving distance to UCLA, so b/c of financial reasons, I am gona have to stay home.
If could afford it, i wouldn’t think twice about it.

For me undergrad degree is not very important since i want to go to pharm school. I just need a bachelors in whatever and take the right prereqs as well.

But, if it mattered, i would take loans to go to prestigious schools for sure b/c that pays off in the end. Don’t worry about that if thats the route u’re taking. U’ll pay it back.

Likewise, Matt, Likewise. Just look for the shortest caucasian male in the room. That will likely be me. (Also, my username is also an Anglicanized version of “eskatos,” which is the Latin root for “eschatology” or the theological branch that deals with questions concerning the end of the world. Latin: Making non-Catholic and Catholics alike seem smarter than they are for over 2,000 years.)

aji1234

Here is my forecast into next month.

I have already been accepted to 3 of the 6 schools I have applied to.

These schools are UCSD,UCI, and UCSB.

My prediction is that I will get into two more schools, leaving me with one rejection. The other 3 schools I have applied to are UC Davis, UC Berkeley, and UCLA.

thanks aji1234, I think I heard that Berkeley considers people in-state for admissions purposes, if they have completed at least 30 units in California. We’ll see what happens…
I’m going to Peru tomorrow, when I come back, I’m two weeks closer to decisions :)

I also got the acceptance letter from SB. Big envelop. Someone on this thread said they send small. I am not sure about that.

Anyhow, Fresh % accepted 52.8%, enrolled 19.3%
Transfer accepted 63.3%
enrolled 24.6%

I thought everyone w/ igetc+2.8 gets in. Why the 63.3%?

Matt, its funny that you should use that example to justify the claim of philosophic practicality- I have seen that example used in the sciences, biology in particular, to justify their studies. When combining your example with one Daniel made earlier, he uses philosophy to contradict the observable phenomenons in science, I see that the philosophy seems to both rely on the sciences for validation and discredits them in the same breath.
Its funny how things work like that- I suppose there are lost of similar examples if we were to examine a lot of fields of study. Again, philosophy is of the utmost intrigue, but I still find some aspects with which I have to let it go- existentialism for example, I understand the philosophy, but cant comprehend what would make a person ascribe to its teachings
please explain, if you can, what drives a person to find that school of thought applicable as a way of living/thinking.

wow…this sure did become a “UC applicants general chat” forum ![]()
whatever works to keep u sane for the next month i suppose…
But yeah, aji1234 I can relate to what you’re saying about studying philosophy. While I’m a very philosophical person (in conversation, etc), I don’t know if I could concentrate my studies on it for your same reasons. Like, I can picture myself after my 20th philosophy class being like aaaaahhhhhhh what’s the point?! What are we getting at/what is the answer?? Haha no disrespect to philosophy majors, I am very intrigued by the subject as well but can’t see myself focusing on that for the rest of college.

When did this become the quasi-, amateur philosophy chatroom? I think informal, amateur philosophical discussion is what turns a lot of people off from philosophy.

Agreed. Philosophy talk gets me really ****ed off sometimes.

I almost decided not to major in philosophy because of it.

Um. was something i said informal or amateur philosophical discussion? because i could have sworn I was stating my personal opinion on choosing phil. as a major…not trying to start some in-depth philosophical argument on the nature of existance or anything…

Who said I was even talking about your post?

gabe- what do you expect to get out of this forum? Whatever it is, stop causing conflict. I was enjoying the conversation with people interested in their subject matter and capable of expressing an opinion. If you are a philosophy major and almost decided not to major in it because other people were talking about it, whether its amateur or not, you may want to reconsider picking an alternate major.

Perhaps its just by chance, but there was another gabe with a similar CC mode of operation. He went away and then you appear as a new member, picking up where he left off in the stirring the pot department. Chance?

well, you were referring to a philosophy chatroom…then added something about amateur discussion…and your post came right after mine…and AND…i like ellipses
wow, lets chill on the righteous discussion forum tip.

lol Hallelujah sister (err, brother)! Lighten up gabe, it’s so easy to be on the attack all the time when ur hiding behind a screen…

wait is the new gabe the old gabe?

gabe!!! you’re back! i’ve missed you! =)
