First time posting… hope I’m in the right place. My son got a letter from his school and another from the UCs (Janet Napolitano) in the fall saying he was ELC, however in his portal under “see how your application is reviewed” it only says top 9% statewide, nothing about ELC. I know both categories guarantee admission to a UC (Merced) but his school doesn’t release ranking and so I really don’t know where he stands in comparison to other students and top 9% of his school is obviously very helpful for some UCs. Anyway, just wondering if it’s supposed to say “ELC” in the portal or if the letter is confirmation of his ELC status and the portal only confirms statewide status. Thanks!
The bottom of Local guarantee (ELC) | UC Admissions confirms that ELC status should be where you are looking for it. You may want to ask UC directly.
Note that ELC status is not based on how your high school ranks students, but by meeting a threshold UC-recalculated GPA. Every few years, each high school sends courses and grades of its students which UC then recalculates GPAs for to determine what the threshold should be (at the top 9% of that set of students from the high school). So, in theory, you can ask your high school or UC what the ELC threshold GPA is for the high school and compare that with the UC-recalculated GPA (probably the weighted-capped version that is the most common one, but they don’t specify).

Thank you. I read in another thread that someone’s child also got the ELC letter from their school and their portal only said “statewide”. I thought maybe it doesn’t always say when the student qualifies for both.

I don’t believe ELC shows up on the applicant portal.
Not related to your question, but why are they sending letters with Janet Napolitano’s signature? She hasn’t been UC President since 2020.

I don’t recall the ELC letter saying anything other than your student is in the top 9%. I don’t remember my D24 portal saying anything about ELC or 9%.
D23 only had statewide on her app - calling @worriedmomucb as I think her daughter had ELC?
Yes, my daughter had ELC on her UC app. She never got a letter or anything prior, however - she only found out when she completed the UC app and it had a page at the end that indicated she had ELC. It did not indicate that she had statewide, however - I had been under the impression that they only list one (even if you potentially qualify for both).
