UC hopefuls, or do I need more safeties?

Southern California Guy: Looking to apply at UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD and maybe Davis or Santa Barbara. Maybe CalPoly SLO or Santa Clara.

UW GPA: 3.98
W GPA: 4.4
Rank in class: Top 6% ELC eligible
AP classes Taken/Taking: APUSH (5), AP Lang/Lit, AP Physics, AP Economics
SAT: 1980
ACT: 29
SAT 2 US His: 700

Extracurriculars: Volunteering at homeless shelter (100+ hours), math club, lots of performing arts hours, president of drama club, music, junior leadership program,
The grades are decent, but SAT/ACT on the lowish side. Think I have a shot?

What's your intended major? You should be okay for UC Davis, SB, and maybe even also SD. Cal and UCLA are more reachy but your GPA and decile are good so you have a chance. You might want to convert your GPA to the UC GPA. You also look good for SLO and Santa Clara. I like the link below, using "Custom Tables" and entering up to 3 "mean characteristics" at at time to see the admit rates for someone that matches your profile:

University of California: StatFinder

You might want to add UCSC if you want a financial safety.

Your admission chance will depend on your major of choice for Cal Poly.

UCSD = high match B and LA are low reaches, you'll get into one of those three with great essays!

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1231725-yale-scea-chance-will-chance-back.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1231725-yale-scea-chance-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Berkeley - Reach
UCLA - Low Reach/High Match
UCSD - Match
UCD/SB - Safety

Maybe throw in SDSU as a safety. If you want a UC you're sure to get into, apply to Merced.

Thank you, all! Will probably apply as undeclared; probably major in something in the humanities. Definitely not in an impacted major like engineering or biology.
Jshain, that Statfinder was great! I wonder, though, why they don't have any more recent figures. I'm guessing that current stats would be a bit higher, i.e., if "average" GPA of admits at a school is 4.1 in 2009, by 2011 it might be up to 4.3 or 4.4?
Dang, this whole thing seems to be SUCH a crapshoot. But this gives me some hope that I'll get in somewhere. Just have to rock the essays.

Just did my UC GPA...4.5! Hopefully that will be worth something!

Berkeley and LA are both reaches. Everything else is a match though. Try to raise your SAT score!

some arts related major?

UC Berkeley - low reach
UCLA - high match
UCSD - low match/match
UC Davis - high safety
UCSB - safety
