***UC Irvine Class of 2020 Admissions Results/Stats Discussion***

LOL whenever I try to help others, I always slide in a self-deprecatory comment. Anyone else do that? xD Like, “you got this! Your stats are way more competitive than mine.” Or maybe something a little bit more subtle

@jackisawesome yeah I hope that they’re not going to just reject everyone from here. A few of my friends got in already and its kind of sad that I still haven’t heard back yet. This was the one school that I had hope for

I’m pretty sure I am the only one of my friends who hasn’t heard anything yet

Man I saw mahpnad posted his (an Asian male so not URM) 3.4x/3.8x/1450sat/22act stats that got him into UCI CS and I have to wonder what’s happening to UCI and maybe a few UCs (esp. UCD) admission in general this year. I mean he himself does not know how he could get in while bunch of 4.0/2000+ still waiting. Mid tier UCs do not really have to do yield protection. What are they trying to gain or climb over in ranking, each other maybe? But admit 3.8/1500 over 4.0/2000+ is beyond reasoning. 4.0/2000+ folks can’t get into UCLA and UCB for CS, not even UCSD this year (yep CS is crazy). So UCI and the likes are logical landing spots. But if UCI thinks they will not come so need to admit folks with much lower stats then something is wrong. So wrong that should make those admitted wonder if they should go to UCI at all. The overall quality of student body is questionable. I am sure they are all nice people and you have to feel happy for them, but I don’t want to go to a campus with kids from such a wide academic gap. You don’t see that in UCB/LA and maybe only a little in SD. UCD and UCI confused me this year, and we shall see what’s like for UCSB. Maybe it’s worth spending more to go private, even those seemingly lower ranked. I don’t think SCU will admit 3.4x/3.8x/1450sat/22act to its CSE.

As many applicants have found out, that Stats are not everything. Low Socioeconomic applicants, First Generation applicants, hardship/disabled applicants are given more consideration. You never know what information was submitted on the application or their essays, so it really is hard to make judgements. I agree that if all things being equal, a 4.0/2000+ applicant will have a better chance at succeeding than a low Stat applicant, but again you do not know the whole story behind the low test scores and GPA. Basically nothing is guaranteed and the “holistic” review of applications is what the UC’s use for the determinations.

Honestly, the entire admissions process seems flawed. I have a theory that while the UCs are not allowed to consider race in their admissions decisions, they are doing so via last name indications (like Liu, Ramirez, etc.). I know the UCs can’t see the actual race, as that would be considered in the state of California (no affirmative action). But, I think that they are doing this under the radar by last name. Honestly, one of the most upsetting possible realities that I could have imagined, for a UC to practice possibly illegal activity in order to promote diversity.

This can be seen by a few URM I know of this year. One of my friends got admitted to UCSD with a 1780 and a 3.95 UC Capped GPA (she has received C’s in the past). She is of pretty high socioeconomic class, her parents went to college, she goes to a great public school, but she is latina. Now, I have a few friends with UC GPA’s of over 4.4 and SATs above 2170 who got either waitlisted or denied. Some of them, including myself, experience SIGNIFICANT socioeconomic/personal conflicts in life and have worked to overcome these obstacles. Yet, someone who was born of high status gets in just because of the way she was born- not the conditions of the area or problems, but based on a feature (something comparable would be people with flat noses getting in over those with larger noses).

I am honestly hoping this isn’t the reality of the current UC admissions situation; but, I can’t help but think that this is the truth, as I see no other viable solutions to such absurd decisions.

Disclaimer: This does not in any way reveal my beliefs on affirmative action.

@Gumbymom it’s just weird because i’m a semi low-income, first gen. college student with average/above average stats and decent EC’s (along with good essays), but i’m still waiting on my decision. no clue what’s taking so long

@9pmerchdude: Having gone through UC/CSU admissions with both son’s and niece in the last 3 years, I understand your frustration about the wait and the uncertainty. I have long given up trying to figure out college admissions, so that is why I always recommend apply broadly, don’t have a “dream school” and hope for the best. Every applicant will be successful where ever they land. Good Luck.

I personally don’t have crazy high stats, but I can see why some of you are upset. Even I would be confused if I was in your position. There is a certain factor in the admissions process that we have no clue about

The guy I referred to (mahpnad) is an Asian male of no obvious hook mentioned. I know you have to compare apple to apple with stats. I am clueless on his admission over others. You rarely see that in UCB/UCLA. UCSD is generally on target as well give or take. UCD and UCI are all over the map this year.

I was surprised tbh most people on here have way better stats and ecs than me and they didn’t get admitted to UCLA …also my stats are okay but not exceptional so I’m surprised how many of you haven’t gotten a response from UCI

@jackisawesome This has been the first major encounter with the real world for most of you kids to learn that you do not nesessarily get what you deserve in a major challenge! Before that all your responsibilities were left in the shoulders of your parents and you were mostly immune from the outcomes.
Later on in life you will meet a lot of other challenges when you go to find a job or even to decide to select the right mate to marry or when you get older and have to deal with major decisions about your kids … and when you get much older you have to deal with your aging heath issues … and at every step you find out that for every little or major challenge there are many possible outcomes and often you only get one (whether by your choice or others’) which may or may not be the best decision!
I know that you are a fine young man and are really awesome (I have read many of your posts) and I am sure you will do much better than most when you face future challenges. If some of these schools did not realized your good character and did not reward you to your satisfaction, don’t discourge. You still can reach to your potential in other schools which you have been admitted to.

I seriously doubt with such a large # of applicants and limited resource of UC, its admission can be that ‘holistic’. UCB maybe (they start to ask LOR). Even there I heard 3 min most each to look over all of one’s EC/essays. The others pretty much based on some algorithm, which of course makes it even more bizarre. Maybe Google needs to come out with an AlphaAdmit to help. I do know if you are in CS and you don’t have near perfect stats, you can pretty much kiss UCB/UCLA good bye. And now the rest of mid UCs can be a crab shoot. Perhaps UCSC this year can get some real solid folks to their CS.

Does anyone know if the scholarship email from uci sent maybe a few weeks ago is a sign of anything? I still haven’t heard back from them but I got that email :frowning:

is there a possibility that people can still get admitted to uci?

@UCLAstudent101 yep! they’re sending out acceptances until the 31st

@Just4Years Where did you receive this information? I know for a fact that the UCs have at least 2 people read each application.

Okay…just got back from walking the campus and the Admin office is totally dark and it doesn’t look like anyone is there. Unless the decisions are automated or unless they are working off campus…here is your chance to step away from the stress if even for a little while! Go shoot some hoops, get outside, watch some hoops, or whatever, but take a break and revisit this all later. Easier said then done, I know, but the break may do you good!

I just realized that I forgot to send in my AP scores to schools, Irvine included. Would that affect my chances? I still haven’t heard back from UCI and it’s freaking me out. It’s my last chance at a UC besides UCSB (I don’t think I’ll get in)

This forum has honestly offered me more support than people I know personally lmao
