Here’s my stats:
SAT:1370
UC GPA: 3.95
APs: AP Calc, AP Psych, AP Lit, AP Enviro, AP World Hist, AP Lang
UC Essays: Good
EC: Hospital Volunteer, Tutoring, Different Club associations
Currently rejected from UCSD, UCSB, UCD
Currently waiting for UCI
Hate asking this (since thousands have already asked, what are my chances realistically?) The constant rejections from the UCs is slowly lowering my confidence that I’ll get anywhere in the UC systems.
@RGStudent There are a ton of people with similar stats and volunteer listing like you. It all comes down to how good and how well thought out you put into your essays. However, my guess would be is that you have a hit or miss for UCI if you’ve been rejected by 4 UCs so far, but even if they were high UCs, their grading criteria is sorta similar in ways in looking at essays and academics etc. Even the major plays a big factor.
@BFPengi Although SJSU isn’t as prestigious as UCSD (if you can even call SD prestigious), it’s a great school for engineering and computer science. Sure it’s an hour away from San Francisco (90 minutes with traffic), but Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple regularly recruit from SJSU, in addition to hundreds of other tech companies and startups, all of which are not in SF, but rather are closer to San Jose. I understand you’re offering your opinion to a student deciding where to spend the next 4 years of his/her life, and I respect your point of view. But San Jose is not a “crappier version of CA”. From my brief experience there, the Bay Area has the best weather, connections to Silicon Valley (seeing as San Jose is in the center of it), and a diverse culture in all aspects. Finally, considering the student lives in San Diego and doesn’t seem to care for the beach much, I don’t see how the lack of a beach in San Jose is a problem
@sas5621 good luck with registering classes at SJSU. Besides the location, it doesn’t have much. If you like SJSU, you shouldn’t have any problem of getting accepted. It’s even in the top 5 of state system.
So I know someone that works in the UC system, and the reason that the UCs are extra competitive this year is because the UCs now have to accept the same number of transfers as they do freshmen. So if you’re going by last year’s stats, this year is going to be very different.
I think the decisions come out after 2:00am, because on the portal site it says the site will be temporally closed from 1:20am-2:00am for maintenance. YIKES
@mgh516 honestly, I think you are right. I have never been attracted to sac state but just like you, I chose it as a safety school I’d say, just in case I wouldnt get into any other college. Thankfully, I am not in this position right now because I have plenty of other choices. From what I saw, the sac campus looks pretty old and it seems isolated and alienated from everything else. i dont know much about the city but definetely there are a lot of cons for someone wanting to study film because it’s far from the industry so that it wouldnt bring tons of opportunity. From email conversations, I realized that the staff is well disorganized. After sending all the records in advance, they said I would have to wait other 4 weeks starting from now, so we are bumping into april here. I also havent heard positive reviews on that school and I totally agree with you. Based on my researches and on my instict I somewhat felt the same regarding it. Definetely not a school that I would attend, never considered that. i just chose it as a safety school, because I didnt feel lime losing a year in case I got rejected by all colleges. But I got into CSU schools and that’s great.
Waiting to hear from : sdsu, csulb (would like to attend) , cal state la and sac state (not thinkin to attend).

The graduation rate of SJSU after 4 years is 11%. 11%!!! Overall only 49% graduate at all with the majority taking 6 years to do it. That means over half the students never even graduate!!! At UCSD 59% graduate after 4 years with a total graduation rate of 87% over 6 years distributed evenly.
Why are there so many SJSU students working for Apple? Because they are local. 75% of SJSU students already live in the Bay Area. Where do they all apply? The big local tech companies. Why do they get paid so much? The Bay Area is arguably the most expensive place to live in the country. The salaries are higher accordingly.
I’m not saying there aren’t extremely bright students at SJSU. Students pick different schools for different reasons. There are some extremely bright locals that don’t want to or can’t take a 4 year study abroad somewhere even if it’s just a few hours away. Some people just go where they live. Some people just don’t do well in high school but excel later. But statistically it’s not a great school and definitely not worth the move from San Diego especially if you got into UCSD.
