UC Irvine Class of 2029 Official Thread

Welcome prospective Anteaters. It’s that time of year again as the UC application has now opened and submission starts October 1 through December 2. I am @Gumbymom one of the two UC Forum Champions/Moderators. My Co-Forum Champion is @lkg4answers and we are knowledgeable on the increasingly complicated UC admissions process and hopefully we can help any prospective UC applicants with their questions.

UC Irvine like all the UC’s are test blind and will use 13 areas of criteria to review Freshman applicants. Each campus will weight the various areas of criteria differently so one size does not fit all. The UC application website has plenty of information that can help determine if UC Irvine is a good option when applying. Below is some admit information specific to the school.

UCI considers all 3 UC GPA’s but their Freshman profile emphasizes the Unweighted and Capped Weighted UC GPA’s.

UCI Podcast: Insights into college admissions

With UCI receiving a record number of applications, admissions director Dale Leaman talks about the admissions process

https://datahub.oapir.uci.edu/Data-Hub/Undergraduate-Admissions-Dashboard.php

2024 Freshman profile 25th-75th percentile:
Unweighted UC GPA: 3.83-4.00
Capped weighted GPA: 4.04-4.27

Major choice is an admissions factor. In the case that UCI is unable to accommodate all qualified applicants in their first-choice major, those students who indicate a valid alternate major may be offered admission in that major or Undeclared.

Selective majors include Business Administration, Nursing, Majors in the College of Information and Computer Sciences, College of Engineering, Business Economics, Cognitive Science, Economics, Psychology, and Quantitative Economics.

New Majors Fall 2025:

Best of luck to all applicants.

How is unweighted UC GPA calculated ? Is it 9th summer-11 summer UC A-G courses, and without adding any extra point for honors/AP/college courses ? Is that it ?

and capped weighted would be adding max 8 points,

and uncapped weighted would be adding all extra points (beyond 8 as well) ?

is that right ?

UC Unweighted is calculated using a-g courses taken the Summer after 9th to the Summer prior to 12th with no extra weighting. Using the Rogerhub calculator, you get all 3 UC GPA’s.

Capped weighted maximum 8 semester Honors points and Weighted Uncapped is unlimited semesters of Honors points.

Thanks,
UC Irvine, uses Capped weighted GPA ?

UCI statistical admission data lists the Unweighted UC and Capped Weighted (capped) UC GPA’s on their website.

Here is the 2024 Freshman data from the UC Counselor conference.

In UC Irvine, we see two schools -
School of Social Ecology and School of Social sciences. and each one have a Psychology maor (BA and BS). Are both these come under same broader school/college, and is it easy to move between them (like if were to change majors).

thanks

Here is the Change of major for each Psychology major.

Psychology BS change of major:

Also in UC Irvine,
There are two majors that are pretty close-
Social Ecology (in School of Social Ecology)
and

in school of social sciences -
Social Policy and Public service
(or)
Sociology

Do you have data on the competitiveness of these across these two colleges ? thinking which is a better one to opt for to increase the admission chances for UCI (or going un-declared in Social Ecology school).

thanks, @Gumbymom

2024 admit rates for Social Ecology was 56.3%, Social Policy and Public Service was 47.3% and Sociology was 33.4%

Is it normal for UCI to do academic spotlight: know your college virtual events in the window between when you apply and when you get decisions?

I think all applicants are invited. My S25 saw this info at the ICS presentation he went to this week - supposedly it is showing GPAs from students applying for fall 2025. Kind of surprised they showed it, especially since it’s not normally info you can find, but glad to see it nonetheless.

Nothing in the slide says it is from fall 2025. In fact, the whole presentation was pre-recorded and it was from last year. Only Q and A at the end was live.

Okay. Thank you for the clarification.

I’m so nervous about UC Irvine’s decision release… Is anyone interested in even portal changes? This kinda is portal astrology so if interested, message me :face_holding_back_tears:

Any comms on when the decisions might be released?

Historically UCI has not given prior notification of when they plan to post decisions. Last year, Freshman decisions were posted on March 8.

I think Gumbymom had provided the following link for UCI:

It’s very informative. Gives breakdown by major and % of candidates selected.
