UC Irvine Raises Record $101.4 Million

This is great news for the school.

One of the criteria for US News is donations to the school. UCI raised a record amount for 2005/2006. A subset of this, is the number of donations and amount from alumni which doubled this past year.

A few big donations came from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation as will as the founder of Pimco who donated $10million to UCI for stem cell research. The main professor was on 60 minutes.

Awesomee. Thanks for the update la_demolition. I’m hoping UCI will have a noticeable increased growth during my years there.

I think another acronym for UCI should be Under Constant Improvement.

At least a couple hundred bucks of that was mine.

Another component to the US News formula is alumni giving rate, which doesn’t necessarily measure the amount of money donated by alumni, but the percentage of alumni that donate. So even if it’s just a few hundred bucks, it looks good as long as a lot of people are donating. So when you guys graduate, make sure that you remember that and donate. Even joining the alumni association counts as donating, since you have to pay dues and that counts.

So get that in your head now! Give back to UCI!

Alicantekid is right. It’s not how much is donated, its how many alumni have donated.

I believe you can also choose how you want your money to be spent - ie, athletic scholarships, etc.

This was just announced. Peter Jackson, the director of King Kong and the Lord of the Rings trilogies has donated money to stem cell research at UCI. Coincidentally, his next project is an adaptation of The Lovely Bones, which was written by a UCI alumni.

Dang, I’m definitely donating money (hopefully a lot in the far future).
